Friday, Jan. 6, 2006 11:10 a.m. EST Clinton NSA Wiretapped Top Republican

During the 1990's under President Bill Clinton, the National Security Agency conducted random telecommunications surveillance of millions of phone calls daily under a top secret program known as Echelon.

But according to at least two people familiar with the spy operation at the time, some of the surveillance was far from indiscriminate.

In a February 2000 interview with CBS's "60 Minutes," NSA operator Margaret Newsham revealed that the agency's listening post in Great Britain was involved in monitoring the phone calls of at least one top Republican on Capitol Hill.

Questioned by "60 Minutes" interviewer Steve Kroft, Newsham recalled how she learned of the illegal surveillance:

"I walked into the office building and a friend said, 'Come over here and listen to--to this thing.' And he had headphones on, so I took the headphones and I listened to it, and I looked at him and said, 'That's an American.' . . .

Ms. Newsham remembered, "It was definitely an American voice, and it was a voice that was distinct. And I said, 'Well, who is that?'

"And he said it was Senator Strom Thurmond."

Until his retirement from the Senate in 2002, Thurmond was a frequent critic of the Clinton administration, who played a leading role in the 1998 impeachment drama - though there's no known connection to the decision to wiretap the South Carolina conservative.

During the same program, however, Kroft consulted with Mike Frost, who worked for Canada's version of the NSA for 20-years.

Asked if it was commonplace for the NSA to monitor the phone calls of top U.S. politicians, Frost told CBS: "Of course it goes on. Been going on for years. Of course it goes on. That's the way it works."

Well, so what. Clinton and dems can do no wrong, ever. They really believe this, too. In fact, when that sociopath was President, a friend of mine, albeit a Liberal idiot, said she didn't care what Clinton had done, rape, murder, pillage, whatever. She didn't care, just as long as he carried out the Liberal agenda. Actually, she lost control and began yelling. We don't discuss politics anymore.

"One thing that is wonderfully predictable about the Democrats and their handmaidens, the media, is when they scream the loudest about some supposed Republican shenanigans it is they themselves who are up to their eyeballs in it."

Bingo. Whenever I hear the left making some ridiculous accusation that would never have occurred to a normal person, I figure it's because it WOULD occur to them. In fact, it's probably something they already did.

I think psychologists call this projection.

"Funny how the media never looked into how Bubba and Janet "The Torch" Reno handled Ruby Ridge, Waco, and other domestic debacles to make sure they had their 't's crossed and 'i's dotted on their warrants, or if there even were warrants. All of a sudden now this stuff is a horrible threat to civil liberties. The media wasn't beating this drum during the Klinton years when the FBI/ATF was kicking in doors, gassing people, and burning their homes with them still inside. Maybe somebody ought to be asking Ted Koppel et al about their coverage on that!! "

BUMP!

I've encountered more than I care to list here who said/wrote exactly the same as to that "not caring" part where Clinton and crimes are involved. They're all over DU and other liberal websites...I think it mostly reveals that Liberals tend to not find any act or behavior a problem other than when someone isn't Liberal.

I think psychologists call this projection.

Either projection or transference. I call it projection and it sure is a reliable indicator into their activities. I suppose their strategy is like the magician using misdirection. If they, with the eager help from the media, can get everyone concentrating on the trumped up charges against Republicans, they figure any investigation of them can be forestalled or called sour grapes, proving that the Republicans are guilty.

Just wish it wasn't Newsmax

Point to ponder: Does either make a sound?

I sure hope Bush has an operation in place that is tapping every scumbag Democrat phone call ever made throughout the world. I hope he is compiling a database of dirt on the scumbags that makes Hillary's FBI files look like a third-grade cheat sheet.

Not to quibble but Echelon has been going on for at least fifty years and continues to this day.

American intellegence agencys are prohibited by charter from spying on American civilians. Same with British and Australian agencys.

So they cut a deal. Each uses it's full power to spy on the others civilians and does'nt interfear with the others spying on their civilians. They then report back any 'interesting' information to their partners overseas. A pissing contest was held when the English used infomation gleaned from their ops to help Airbus win a contract but mostly it's been smooth sailing.
