Super Bowl Wants Only Young Dancers

DETROIT - Mick Jagger and his bandmates may be nearing senior citizenship, but Super Bowl planners only want people 45 and younger to take the field during the Rolling Stones' halftime show.

The NFL is offering 2,000 people a chance to watch the Stones play during the Feb. 5 extravaganza. They will be expected to dance, sing and cheer.

"This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience the Super Bowl from a totally unique perspective," NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy told The Detroit News.

People are asked to apply in groups of 20 or more and be at least 18 years old and no older than 45. Signup is under way on the Web site of Star Flow Entertainment, the company organizing the volunteers.

The NFL says the reason for the age cutoff is that the job is physically challenging. Volunteers must enter and exit the field quickly and be on their feet for long periods. They will not have seats and will wait in a tunnel under Ford Field for most of the first half.

Participants also must attend up to five rehearsals that could last seven hours each.

"You have to attend rehearsal and be able to stand for long stretches of time," McCarthy told the Detroit Free Press. "And you have to run onto Ford Field with 2,000 other folks."

Although I've always skipped Super Bowl halftime shows,I'll be tuned in to this one just to see if they finally put a toe tag on Keith Richards.

I can only surmise this is an effort at keeping me off the field after an NFL executive attended a wedding I was at and witnessed my dancing technique.

Please allow me to introduce my self,
I'm a man way past my prime.
I've been around a long,long time
Stole many a man's youth and verve.

...

Pleased to meet you,
Hope you don't have to Carbon date
But what's puzzling you
Is how I remain in the game.

Those guys took truckloads of hard drugs for years, and now it looks like they'll outlive all their fans. Is this a part of life not being fair?

How old are you, 90? My biggest pet peeve on FreeRepublic is when we disagree with an actor or musician invariably at least 10 people say they never liked their music or acting skills. It's ridiculous. Fine, you don't like them...however, there's no denying they are one of the, if not THE, most successful bands in the history of Rock and Roll.

If I was even under 45 , why do they think I would do all of that, for free?

I have seen and heard most of the rock albums of the 60's, 70's and 80's. I have worked at or see many bands. The Rolling Stones are crap.

The biggest non news story of the year!!!! This is not a government run game. They can have whoever they want out there. Who wants to see Grandma jumping up and down looking crazy. I know Grandma is the baby boomers now, but come on, enough.

It shows you what an incredible grip the Baby Boomer culture has on America. The Stone were forty years ago. This is analogous to the 1965 Super Bowl halftime featuring Rudy Vallee and Ruth Etting, backed by the Clicquot Club Eskimos. Needless to say, the 1920s culture had nowhere near the grip of the 1960s.
