'Not in my back yard' cry holding up FEMA trailers

'Not in my back yard' cry holding up FEMA trailers Emotional tone of opposition hints at role of stereotypes of race, class Monday, December 26, 2005 By Rob Nelson and James Varney%%par%%Staff writers As officials desperately seek temporary housing locations for New Orleans families whose homes were shattered months ago by Hurricane Katrina, the best site in the minds of many residents is clear: somewhere else.

In one of the post-Katrina era's ironic role reversals, the same local officials and residents who once screamed at FEMA to get trailers to New Orleans quickly are now fending off the 17,777 trailers that FEMA has on hand in Louisiana and says it can deliver immediately.

Now that you have a problem, you're striking out at others; it pretty much sucks, IMO.

Sorry, Howlin Mad ... now it is your turn to say something stupid.

I do not have a problem at all ... I actually did something constructive about the mess that is New Orleans and Louisiana  ...  I got out nearly 20 years ago and never went back.

The "mess" was not created solely by the people in Louisiana and New Orleans ... the federal government/welfare society played a dominant role in creating the problem.

Frankly, no one want[s] "the malcontents and criminals" [a failed federal welfare system] created in [their] backyard either.     But ... they have to be somewhere ... and all of y'all who do not want to see New Orleans rebuilt ... cannot have it both ways ... either rebuild New Orleans to warehouse the "malcontents and criminals" there ... or you get to have them in YOUR backyard.

As for me, personally, I do not have a NIMBY problem. I live on a farm now ... and my "backyard" is big enough that I have NO neighbors! So ... it is not ME I am concerned about!

None of that keeps me from being kindly disposed toward family and friends, and even strangers, that I left behind.

There is no point in continuing this discussion. Good bye.

And if they picked YOUR land to put those trailers on?

I have a feeling you'd squeal like a stuck pig.

For some reason you have a need to disparage others whom you know nothing about; I suppose it's to make yourself feel morally superior.

Welfare; the gift that keeps on giving.

I say we put a complete stop to it. Give 'em six months notice, then we teach them all to fish and let them sink or swim.

God bless you Dacus and the others like you. I think this thread provides a vent for those of us who are tired of those unlike you and your neighbors. Please do not take it personal. I lived in Louisiana on a beautiful riverbank years ago. We knew when storm surges came that we would have problems. We didn't gripe and scream help because we were aware of the risk when we bought there. We had water in the house twice - had to go in and out by boat numerous times. I know the filth that the water leaves behind very well.....lots of elbow grease involved. The Red Cross came by and offered a doughnut ONCE. The local media even came boating by for an interview.

My best wishes to you and yours - thanks for posting.

It's not just in the city of New Orleans either. What Katrina exposed is the decay in every inner city ghetto

AMEN CC. Imagine if you will, Detroit in the same circumstances as NO. New Orleans just had the bad/good luck to have the "Big Easy" facade torn away.

Thank You Howlin. I love you. Your my 'Knight' in shining in armour. How this got so out of hand I have nooooo idea. I lived in a single wide trailer 2 summers in Oklahoma. I was in college. Nothing wrong with trailers or people in them. Just don't want them across my property fence.

I don't think that is what Mrs. Shawnlaw is saying at all; it's one thing to put a trailer on YOUR own property; it's quite another to put hundreds of trailers in the lot next door to people.

Actually I do have literally hundreds of trailers not far from my house. My cousin just happens to own the RV park and it is full to over flowing and there are not any additional problems because it is run very well. They are not the NOLA evacuees but the hard working people of Cameron and Calcasieu Parish.

You should be thankful because they mostly work in the refineries so that folks can have gasoline and other petroleum based products like heating fuel, tires, etc. If they didn't have somewhere to live while their homes were being repaired or rebuilt then they couldn't work here because there is a severe shortage of housing.

Normally the folks staying there are in those rolling mansions and are rich snow birds who like to gamble. However, the need at the moment is for FEMA or travel trailers. He's got a waiting list of over 100. If anyone causes problems they are gone. The law enforcement and zoning people stay on top of things and keep the problems down. There are no problems with the residents.

The people from Cameron Parish would love to go home but it's still closed, because it looks like a bomb has gone off. They don't have electricity or other basic services yet so nobody can go home. They still have debris all over the place. I went down to Big Lake today and it looks like the storm just passed still. They have a long way to go before the parish is able to function.

We will have major problems if we don't deal with this festering problem the right way. It isn't something that we can just snap our fingers and it will be all better either.

Besides, wherever those trailers end up, they'll be there FOREVER

Not so.

And FWIW, the FEMA trailer parks in Pensacola are neat, clean, and well maintained.

For a little bit of perspective on the problem in my part of the state. If you look down to the lower right hand corner there's a bunch of travel trailers. This is fairly common right now. When your area gets hit by a Cat 3 hurricane chances are real good that there will be great devastation. Some of the most damaged areas are in the nicer parts of town.

Thank you, CajunConservative, for posting this. I know that some folks in this country [and on FRee Republic] cannot see past their own self-absorption ... but others will, I bellieve, begin to comprehend the incredible destruction of the Gulf Coast, if they can see some of it for themselves.

Maybe they can park the trailers next to nuclear power plants and wind farms.

FEMA says the trailers can be supplied... it is the local councils that don't want the trailers planted. Or, did you not read the entire article?

I was really surprised at how much damage was still evident in the Big Lake and surrounding area. It does not look like much has been done yet that's not true when you see the massive debris piles. I can't explain the smell but it was musty, salty, oppressive there. They have a long road ahead but I saw many people busy working on their homes.

This will be my last post on this thread and I hope it will be taken in the spirit in which it is posted. I will not respond to any posts.

This country is in great peril of having "scattered site" destruction, across the land, from terrorist attacks that could rival the destruction from the 2005 Gulf Coast Hurricanes. It has been predicted by many that that will be the format of the next terrorist attack[s]. And, it is not a matter of if, but when this may occur.

I sincerely hope the predictions will be proven wrong. I further hope that, if that sort of destruction occurs, the folks in this country [including some of you on FRee Republic] will be able to put aside their sniveling, self-absorbed points of view, and petty differences, and unite to defeat an enemy that is far, far worse, and more deadly, than a random Hurricane and far, far more important than the locations of a few FEMA trailers.

I invite your attention to a recent FRee Republic post that reiterates information already available:

American Hiroshima

I pray that nothing terrible like this ever happens to this country; but, if it does, I pray that all men [and women] of good will can put aside their differences to help each other.

Only time will tell if that will happen.
