Here is a basic recipe but really it is just left overs of veg and if want add bacon or other meat fried up in a frying pan the next day.

Bubble and Squeak
This classic dish originally contained beef along with the left-over cooked potatoes and cabbage, though today people don't generally bother with the meat. The name is apparently due to the sounds that are emitted during cooking, the vegetables bubble as they are boiled and then squeak in the frying pan.

INGREDIENTS:
Butter - 25 g (1 oz)
Onion - 1, finelychopped
Potatoes - 450 g (1 lb), cooked and mashed
Cabbage - 225 g (8 oz), Optional - Beef or bacon/ham - 4-8 slices, cooked and finely chopped

COOKING: 1. Melt the butter in a large frying pan, add the onion and fry for a few minutes until softened, stirring frequently.

2. Add the potatoes and cabbage. If you are including the beef, add this as well. Fry over a medium heat for 15 minutes until brown then serve.

Happy New Year!

Every year I like to kick back and relax and watch the Mummers (which is on now on WGN, by the way -- they pick it up at 3 for the string bands).

Napa Valley made MSN headlines!

You got the wind storm that was forcasted for here.

We did have a day of Respite and even saw Mr. Sun here and there.

Just now starting to storm a little.

I think overall we all been lucky no massive mud slides.

Our hiking group is still on although we are all dressing in Rain Gear.

The gals suggested REI I went with an all weather hunting cape for $8 bucks hopefully it will breathe so I don't over heat.

This warm wet weather has been WONDERFUL for King Vanities trach care.

SO this is #6 blowin in.

How is it today in your Neighborhood?
BTW I loved seeing the folks in there canoe's on the news down there.

Gotta Love those that perservere and stay positive.

Okay-

Yesterday I took a little trip... I live in a small town NW of Atlanta. I put together a basket of cookies and items from small local businesses here in my town. I drove to downtown Atlanta. I went to the WGKA (920 AM radio station) office. Herman Cain has his radio show every Saturday from 3-6 pm.

When I was helping in the promotion for Nite of Hope Atlanta (we fed over 2,000 homeless an elegent Thanksgiving Dinner- with skits, music etc- with the message of Christ.)- Herman Cain did the voiceover for a promo we did for the event. He OFFERED to do it- did it for NO CHARGE- and REFUSES to accept a receipt for donating his services so he can use it for tax purposes. WGKA ran the promo for us.

Anyway- I went down to give them this basket as a THANK YOU...

I got there- wnet up the elevator. As I stepped off the elevator- there is this TALL, HANDSOME, Black man- in a black leather jacket and an AWEOSME genuine leather cowbay hat. I turned to him, tilted my head, and said, "Herman?"

He looked at me- GRINNED REAL BIG AND SAID- "SHERRI! HEy Doll! HOW ARE YOU!?" He gave me the biggest hug! His exec director- Matt Dawg was there- he gave me a big hug too!

We sat around chatting for a about 20 minutes about kids, teaching them to drive, etc..what school he went to...his daughter went to UGA- he and his son went to Morehouse...his daughter has 2 children...
nice chat...

then Herman says- "Sherri we are going to have a little quiz on the show today, find out what our listeners have learned this year."

I said- "and you're going to give me tha answers?" LOL! He laughed!

Said "NO! But I am going to give you this." He handed me a CD. As a prize for the callers- they would get this CD. It is a CD of Herman SINGING! He made it about 10 yrs ago! It is all Christian music! VERY NICE!

Then Matt says, "6 minutes."

I told them I would go- let them get to work...

Herman says "NO NO NO! You get to come in the studio with us today."

I said, "no - I understand you have a job to do- a show to do- I didn't come to intrude- I just wanted to thank you in person."

"I WANT you to come in Sherri! I want to show you how we do the show."

I got to sit in the studio for the show! the let me have my own set of headohones and everything! It was AWESOME! He did NOT have to be so kind to me! He did NOT have to do that! I was VERY THRILLED and VERY BLESSED!

What a GREAT way to start off my New Year!

Long story- but I just couldn't hold it in anymore!

Thanks for listening!

Don't get me in trouble now- expecting him to do it for everyone- or getting him in trouble for letting me join them! LOL!

I always think of my German grandad's handmade "slaw grater" hanging on a hook at the top of the basement stairs. You just never knew when there might be a cabbage that needed brining into kraut, so that grater had to be handy!

He made the wooden part of the grater, but I guess you could buy blades for them back then--but I'm certain he sharpened it himself. The crocks they used to brine the kraut are certainly collectors' items now.

I have his old meat grinder for sausages and such. Those hand-cranked ones haven't changed a bit in over a century.

Wish it were an original, but I can't take credit. There is a person on one of the crime forums I follow that has as her tagline "What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?"

I still ROFLMAO every time I see it!

My mother had one of those old meat grinders...I used to have to turn if for her...

She would make her own hash...from leftover roast.
