I see no need at all for olive oil. My ancestors did just fine with lard (hog fat)

My mother was forced to quit a 3 pack a day habit when she had a heart attack when she was about 50...

She died this year at 73...but, she nagged and berated others that smoked from the day she quit...I hated it.

I quit 10 years ago, cold turkey...but I NEVER get on to people that do...because I know that when I did smoke I enjoyed it more than I hated it.

My main reason to quit was that my husband of 33 years has never smoked...and I didn't want to impose the smell and such on him...BUT, he never told be to quit....because he is the son of an alcoholic father..and he knows that unless someone REALLY wants to quit..

it doesn't do any good to nag them. I agree with what both of you have said...and I feel the same.

The title is yet to be decided.

The subject of the book, and a tentative title I'd been kicking around is "Christians and the media: what every churchgoer should know about television and the press." a fellow freeper,LS, is helping me refine my ideas about the book, get them back down on paper. this is my second try at the book. the first met with mostly positive results, although those who reviewed it said I needed to narrow my focus on the second attempt.

Happy New Year of 2006 to all my FReeper FRiends!

In the year ahead:

May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be ever at your back;
May the sun shine full upon your face,
May the rain fall soft upon your fields;
And until we meet again,
May the Good Lord keep you in the Palm of His Hand!

Seems like the same kind of thing as kale and mashed potatoes. Isn't that Irish? Colcannon? That's good. I love sauerkraut AND mashed potatoes, so I'll put them together one of these days.

Congratulations on your pending nuptials...

I haven't heard any fireworks here yet...but I saw on Fox early today that Travis County had some big fires..(I think that is Austin, I am not sure)...

I had to go to the liquor store this morning...and I had heard that a fire was near the one I usually go to...but I was shocked when I got there...and the grass was totally black all the way up the their parking lot and building..all the way around it.

Those people must have just stood there with about a dozen hoses raining down on that store to keep it from being burned.

They have a standing $5000 reward here for anyone who turns in a person who shoots off a GUN tonight and the info leads to an arrest and conviction.

Its just my opinion, but, I'd save the lard for pie crusts (the best you can get), I've always been told that any animal fat can become rancid over time and is a poor choice for seasoning pans that will retain the oil for long periods of time.

I guess its a personal choice.

I would say that peanut oil would be ideal because it can take higher temps than most cooking oils without burning, but some people can have a severe reaction to peanuts and cast iron, being porous will retain the oil for a long time.

I know there is an Irish dish named Colcannon that is mashed potatoes and cabbage...

I make a type of "soup/stew" with Keilbasa, and potatoes and cabbage...and a touch of vinegar...yum.

If I had one wish that I could wish this holiday season, it would be that all the children to join hands and sing together in the spirit of harmony and peace.

If I had two wishes I could make this holiday season, the first would be for all the children of the world to join hands and sing in the spirit of harmony and peace. And the second would be for 30 million dollars a month to be given to me, tax-free in a Swiss bank account.

You know, if I had three wishes I could make this holiday season, the first, of course, would be for all the children of the world to get together and sing, the second would be for the 30 million dollars every month to me, and the third would be for encompassing power over every living being in the entire universe.

And if I had four wishes that I could make this holiday season, the first would be the crap about the kids definitely, the second would be for the 30 million, the third would be for all the power, and the fourth would be to set aside one month each year to have an extended 31-day orgasm, to be brought out slowly by Rosanna Arquette and that model Paulina-somebody, I can't think of her name. Of course my lovely wife can come too and she's behind me one hundred percent here, I guarantee it.

Wait a minute, maybe the sex thing should be the first wish, so if I made that the first wish, because it could all go boom tomorrow, then what do you got, y'know? No, no, the kids, the kids singing would be great, that would be nice. But wait a minute, who am I kidding? They're not going to be able to get all those kids together. I mean, the logistics of the thing is impossible, more trouble than it's worth! So -- we reorganize! Here we go.

First, the sex thing. We go with that. Second, the money. No, we got with the power second, then the money. And then the kids. Oh wait, oh jeez, I forgot about revenge against my enemies! Okay, I need revenge against all my enemies, they should die like pigs in hell! That would be my fourth wish. And, of course, my fifth wish would be for all the children of the world to join hands and sing together in the spirit of harmony and peace. Thank you everybody and Merry Christmas.
