Since you seem to love kitty cats, have you ever heard of a Ragdoll cat? Hubby's brother has one and that is the most laid back cat, I have ever seen. It needed lots of attention, though. Very expensive.

Every single dang time I try to season my cast-iron pan it turns out gummy, so I never use it. I scrub it all off and try again. What am I doing wrong?

Well, what I do is liberally coat the inside of the skillet with corn oil leaving just enough oil in the pan where I can roll it around. I coat the outside of the skillet with a very light coat of oil using a paper towel in order to prevent rusting. Put the cold skillet in a cold oven and turn it on to 185-200 degrees. Every couple of hours I check on it and use the oil in the bottom of the skillet to recoat the sides. After about 8 hours I turn off the oven and allow the skillets to cool down with the oven. Tomorrow before I put the ham on I'll wipe any excess oil out of the inside of the pans and they'll be ready for the cornbread baking. They'll still look oiled until they've been used several times and then they develop the (for lack of a better word) patina of a well seasoned skillet.

When you're trying to season your cast-iron how high are you setting the oven temp? I've never experienced gummy but have heard a too high temp can be the culprit.

325 for a couple hours in the oven. Use shortening or vegetable oil. Wipe with paper towel. Repeat. Repeat.

Then fry up a pound of bacon. Reserve grease. (Tell you what to do with it another time). Wipe with paper towel.

I live in North Texas - I've never heard of Kuner kraut. My husband and I lived in Pittsburgh for a couple of years - they had some great kraut there.

Not many people like kraut, but if it's cooked correctly, it's delicious. I think the bacon/pork flavors are what keep it from being bitter. I'm going to have to try your recipe - it's a little more elegant than mine!

We love to have mashed potatoes with our kraut, too. Is that some sort of a tradition? My mother is french, my father is german and I was born in germany. She always made mashed potatoes with her kraut. I have often thought of mixing the kraut with the potatoes and some mustard to make a kraut potato salad.

Thank you for your service in the Air Force.

I tried to join the Marines in 68 but was rejected because of having an earlier back injury.

My best friend joined the Marines in 68 when he was 17, he never lived to see 18 years of age, but knew what he was getting into when he joined.

I know what you mean about the "patina." I took care of a friend's house while she was recuperating from a stillbirth and she had pans like that.

It was not the time nor place to ask her how she did it.

Forget the destructions on the pan, keep the oven temp. about 200deg. and use olive oil for seasoning pans.

I've always wondered, but never really checked into it. Maybe it's a German thing?

Yes...my daughter and her husband were going to go visit friends out of town...but, their house backs up to Marine Creek Lake...and that is notorious spot for shooting off fireworks..

They were afraid if they went, their house and doggies might be gone when they got back.

I told her...at first sign or sound of a firecracker, to call the fire dept. or police dept.---this isn't funny this year.

We are down 16 inches in rainfall...and the brush and undeveloped land is just like kindling...

We had fires just a few miles from my house last week that destroyed dozens of beautiful huge homes...

They are trying to tell people not even to use their outdoor grills, because with the high winds even they could start a fire...

Hope to get over soon to be ex who traded me in for a younger model. A man who says he is a conservative but has actions of a liberal. Lies to deceive and claims he does it to protect others because he was just trying to be a nice guy. Then he never has to look at his own actions.
