Glad I went back and read the thread as I was going to post a link to that article. It is very interesting to read where our traditions come.

I loved smoking

So did I!! And I will miss it until the day I die. You know, I think I will always consider myself a "smoker"......I just don't smoke anymore. Only someone who has been a lifelong smoker and who has quit would understand that. I've heard that mentality holds true with other addictions as well.

I have never jumped on the anti-smoker bandwagon, for exactly the reasons you stated. I hated those who were constantly preaching at me, and I won't do it to anyone else. There are people near and dear to me who still smoke. I have never said one admonishing word to them. They know what they are doing. If my example doesn't impress them, nothing I can say will. But the fact is, if you're gonna dance, eventually you're gonna have to pay the piper.

Happy New Year, Humidston!

The main thing he must keep in mind is that he is building
self-esteem with every day he stops, eventually his self-esteem will out weigh any desire he has to continue stopping. The enemy of all this is backsliding, it does
no good to go a week or two then have a smoke, as you have
just destroyed those weeks of esteem and have even a higher
ramp to get over.
When I quit thirty years ago, I was smoking two or more
packs a day, one day I looked at the ground around my
work station, (I was a welder) and there were SIXTY butts
around my feet, my girl had just dumped me and the world
was falling in, but I quit then and there and never went
back.
My mom finally quit about 15 years ago and would come telling me how hard it was, etc. I told her then,
"There will come a time when you will never even think
about a cigarette!" She didn't believe me then, but now
smoking is just a bad memory.
Good luck to your husband, he CAN do it, just don't let up!
Happy smoke free New Years!
t.

It's nice to hear what others are doing for New Years. I hope the Cable News Networks will show Big Ben ringing in the New Year!

Here in the U.S., tonight and tomorrow's meals are the end of a month long pig out of cramming in as many food memories as possible.

Then, it's another American tradition to go on a diet starting Jan. 2nd! Happy New Year...sw

are we not all fortunate to have found such a warm, loving home here at FRee Republic?!

I will second that I have had so much support during mum's illness and when she died.

I hope to have my book published and in stores by years end. I also plan to start re-reading the bible through from one end to the other again.

I just joined FreeRepublic, and am very happy to be here! Althought I am not sure if i am posting correctly (how to reply to all?). I can't wait to read more on the site, everything looks great - it is not always easy finding politically like-minded people in Boston.
Happy New Year everyone!

One of the things that helped me quit after decades of smoking was immediately getting rid of all smoking paraphenalia in the house. Out went every package of cigarettes, dollar lighters, ash trays (except for company ones), forgotten stubs in the garage.

I quickly gave away some beautiful, expensive lighters I had received as gifts over the years (sob). The removal of all these visible reminders helped me stay on the wagon. It hurt a little.....but I just steeled myself and did it. They're only "things", anyhow. In a week or so I actually forgot what I got rid of.

A few weeks after I quit, I found a cigarette on the floor when I was cleaning under my computer desk. Just for the halibut, I lit it and inhaled. It almost knocked me on my derriere, and I'm not kidding. A wave of dizziness. Never tried that again. This permanently removed any desire I had to sneak a cig now and then.

Three years this week and holding firm........and feeling great.

First footings in England. A dark haired man goes out the back door just before midnight and for luck they have a piece of coal, they then re-enter through the front door on the stroke of midnight.

Thank you so much for the encouragement. I know it will mean a lot to him - it means a lot to me. "Smoke free" is the phrase to use! The freedom from being controlled by an addiction, and the self-esteem that comes from being able to overcome it are good points.

Congratulations to you and your mom.

Thank you and God bless you for your service to America, tet68.
