'Los Angeles Times' Quotes Fake News Release

NEW YORK A front-page story in Tuesday's editions of the Los Angeles Times attributed a quote to Wyoming Gov. Dave Freudenthal that was taken from a fake news release circulated as an April Fool's joke earlier this year.

The article, headlined "Wolves Thrive but Animosity Keeps Pace," examines the reintroduction of wolves to the American West and the controversy surrounding the possible move to take the predators off the federal Endangered Species Act.

To bolster the argument that delisting the animals would allow states to "exterminate whole packs" of the animals, Times Staff Writer Julie Cart quoted Wyoming Gov. Dave Freudenthal as saying his state "now considers the wolf as a federal dog," unworthy of protection.

The Times printed a correction in Wednesday's editions (and attached it to the online version of the article) acknowledging that the news release was a hoax.

"The reporter saw it on the Internet and had talked with the governor in the past, so she was familiar enough with the way he talks and writes that she thought it sounded authentic, and she didn't check, which she should have," Times Deputy Metro Editor David Lauter told the Casper Star Tribune.

"We hate when this kind of thing happens, and we correct it as quickly as we can," Lauter said.

According to The Associated Press, the fake press release was distributed by Maury Jones, an outfitter in the community of Afton, Wyo., as a joke for April Fool's Day.

"I never thought I'd get this kind of reaction," he told AP. "But it's got some legs."

"she was familiar enough with the way he talks and writes that she thought it sounded authentic...."

Note they are subtly implying that even though the governor never said this, they know it is an "accurate" reflection of his beliefs. Similar to CBS statements on the fake Bush guard story.

If only it had a little blatant Bush-bashing, the LA Slimes might have made it a banner headline.

I ran this through the Babelfish online service for MSM stories and it came out as the following:

Republicans are crazy so they are capable of saying anything, which is why we don't checkout the things they say, or would say if they were off their meds, for accuracy.

Ok, so let me get this straight. They "hate it when this happens." And, what happened? This reporter's "failure to perform tasks required by the job." If you fail in this way working anywhere else, you get fired. I didn't read where they had fired the reporter. Why did I not read that? Why did they not do that? Does this mean it is ok for a reporter to not perform his/her job? Apparently so.

Yeah, I hate when the LATimes can't be trusted to tell the truth, either.

They also used as second source to verify it - The Onion.

So, was this a news article or an opinion piece on the front page?

Pravda on the Pacific would probably get better qualified reporters if they'd tap the local high school newspapers for talent. Lord knows, what they have is pitiful.

What the Heck is a "federal dog"? Would it in any way be related to a feral dog?
