Excerpts -
WASHINGTON, Dec. 29 (UPI) -- By this time next year Kofi Annan will be packing his bags ready to hand over the United Nations to a new Secretary General, but choosing the seventh U.N. head since the world body's inception in 1945 may not follow the usual formula, and could produce a surprise.Although Annan does not leave office until Jan 2007, behind the scenes the campaign for the succession is getting into gear, and diplomats in the glass tower on the East River expect the appointment to be sewn up well ahead of time, probably by next summer.

There seems no longer to be a Bill Clinton factor to give the equation some extra dazzle. Last year, close aides and acquaintances of the former U.S. president were saying that Clinton was interested in taking over at the United Nations. When Annan appointed him U.N. Special Envoy for Tsunami Relief earlier this year, with a suite of offices in the New York headquarters building, some saw it as a possible prelude to the full appointment, which was said to have broad Third World following. But Washington sources said a number of circumstances mitigated against his reported aspirations, including questions about his health, the fact that he would not be able to campaign for his wife Sen. Hillary Clinton if she were to run for president in 2008, possible opposition of some major nations reluctant to see the United Nations under American control -- to say nothing of possible opposition from the Bush administration. "Yet," comments Annan's advisor, "President Clinton remains the most formidable candidate to spearhead UN reform. Few have the political clout to lead the charge through the thicket of political intransigence and bureaucratic inertia."

The U.S. is reported to favor Polish President Aleksander Kwasnewski.
The UN has outlived it's usefullness, and needs to be mercifully put down, like the old dog that it is. The world will be a better place after it's gone.
Imagine this scenario: Hillery wins in 2008. Later, the new UN head mysteriously dies (suicide?). Then Bill gets the job.
She has provoked too much hatred to win in 2008.
I hope so, but also don't want to underestimate her. Look how far her make-over has progressed so far, and she has lots of time still for more (with the full support of the MSM of course).
Yes, the UN is a totally dysfunctional institution which is why Bill would fit right in. Aside from the biggest financial swindle in modern history (Oil-for-Food) there was a huge sex scandal. Bill could even get Cuban cigars to carry on the tradition he started in the Oval Office. And can't we imagine him biting his lip and saying, "I did NOT have sex on THAT continent!" And just as Kofi's son Kojo got that Mercedes so could Chelsey cash in. Hillary would happy knowing that Bubba would be fully preoccupied and he'd disappear from her sight as fast as the Rose law firm records!
Yeah baby keep the corruption, graft and outright thievery coming. Put Bill Clinton is power at the u.n. and then you'd get to see that koffee anan is really a lightweight crook.
How many have Mrs. and Mr Clinton had murdered?
I would guess that the U.N. will be headed by someone that everyone can like and respect. It will herald the beginning of the end as more folks get sucked into the black morass of a "unified world".
--Yes, the UN is a totally dysfunctional institution which is why Bill would fit right in.
And useless which also fits the Bill.
Is there any crime Bill Clinton can commit that would discredit him in some people's eyes?
Time to stock up on ammo.
