Cornyn Speaks On Immigration (opposes a fence)

MISSION — U.S. Sen. John Cornyn said Tuesday that building a fence along the southwest border is unrealistic and ultimately would not deter illegal immigration into the United States.

Cornyn, R-Texas, was in Mission on Tuesday to discuss flood control and the Rio Grande Valley levee system, but spoke briefly with the media about immigration issues and his plan to allow workers into the country legally but temporarily. He said he would not support a bill calling for a security fence — which could start in California and end in Brownsville — although the U.S. House of Representatives approved the measure last week. The Senate will discuss the measure when they reconvene next year, and Cornyn said immigration would be a pertinent issue.

He expects a compromise between the Senate and the House on immigration bills.

"(The wall) is a 19th century solution to a 21st century problem," Cornyn said, calling for a more comprehensive immigration plan. Millions of immigrants, both documented and undocumented, cross daily through the southwest border and Cornyn said his bill permits workers to enter for a set time period, calls for increased enforcement at the border and more investigations into employers that hire illegal immigrants.

Hidalgo Mayor John David Franz said he would oppose any wall cutting through his border city.

"I think we need to be looking at amicable solutions," he said. "(A wall) would put us back 100 years. A wall isn’t going to solve anything."

Have you ever been to the border? You can literally watch illegals crossing in broad daylight right before your eyes. It's ridiculous.

A fence would certainly slow them down. It's not the fence in of itself that would stop them, it's gaining control so patrol and surveillance has a fighting chance.

Your never going to prevent all entry spots, but something is better than nothing. Heck, if not a fence, put the national guard down there. Just do something.

I'm not sure what he is, but if your dancing around the subject while the problem progressively gets worse then I'd say your not serious about the problem. He's probably a fine fella, but enough is enough with this illegal thing.

The government estimates we have around 10-12 million illegals in this country. Now, take and add another 5 million to that and the figure will most likely be closer.

Guest worker program is nothing more than an ultimate amnesty. Past presidents have legalized millions of illegals by a stroke of the pen. When's this madness going to stop?

I don't disagree that it would slow them down for awhile until they exploited the other ways to enter the country.

So we permanently cut off access to the Rio Grande for the ranchers and farmers, as well as recreational use, in order to force the illegal immigration into other parts of the country.

That seems like a pretty stiff price to pay just to make things more inconvenient for the illegals.

Here is what most of our southern border looks like: there is no fence at all, just whatever is left over from some forgotten cattle fence, built privately to keep U.S. cattle from wandering freely into Mexico. For comparison, below it is a sample of an inexpensive but highly effective double border fence system, with a plowed strip to reveal footprints.

Here is what some of San Diego County has, a wall made of rusty VN era runway mats. The corrugations are parallel, to make climbing easier. These illegals were spotted by unexpected civilian volunteers, and jumped back over the border.

Here is what the border looks like where the runway mat wall exists. Mexico begins on the other side of the ineffective rusty wall, which actually helps the smugglers, by hiding their movements until the BP has driven out of sight.

This is how "the game" is played. Smugglers hide on the other side of the wall with their dope and/or their illegals, out of sight of the USBP. They wait for the highly visible white BP vehicle to drive over the distant hills. Lookouts with cell phones and walkie talkies report on the location of the BP units. They know with certainty that "the coast is clear" for an hour or two, and the smugglers and illegals hop the fence and run into the scrub only 50 yards away. From there, they are out of sight, and they walk 1-2 miles to holding houses. Then they wait for nightfall, and are picked up and driven in vans to LA or San Diego.

Lastly, below is the Duncan Hunter 15' fence, which is already being built along a few "showplace" miles of San Diego, mainly near the ports of entry. The House has approved building 700 miles of it, which would be a great start. As you can see, the rusty runway wall is seen at left. In areas with the 15 foot fence, dope smugglers and illegals will have to cross 50-100 yards of open sand road ("the government road" as it is called) before starting to try to get over the 15 foot fence. It's extremely tough, and resists cutting. Attacking the fence would have to be done in the open, right on the open sand, in full view of cameras. This type of fence, on the U.S. side of the government road, will give the USBP a barrier to patrol, instead of forcing them to chase illegals around 100,000 square miles of wide open frontier land, which is a fool's errand.

So don't tell us modern fence systems won't work, we're not all as stupid as six year old children.

Be honest for once, and admit your true agenda: open borders, and an end to American sovereignty.

Based on what I have seen on this thread, THAT makes a lot of sense.

We need the wall for a lot of reasons -- even if it isn't a total solution, we need it as a symbol that we intend to protect our borders.

Again, any and every politician R, D or I, misunderstands this at his or her peril.

I don't know of any rancher that would set foot in that river let alone pump from it for their cattle.

That stretch of the Rio Grande is horribly polluted from the industrial plants and raw sewage from Mexico. There is very little environmental controls in Mexico, especially along the border.

Let me restate this one more time because you couldn't grasp it the first time.

Even an effective fence will divert the illegal immigration to other areas of entry.

At best, you will inconvenience them.
