New NBC show stars Jesus, pill-popping priest (touted as riskiest show yet)

NBC has begun promoting a new weekly show in January that centers around a troubled, pill-popping Episcopal priest played by veteran actor Aidan Quinn, who talks with a manifestation of Jesus, played by Garret Dillahunt.

"The Book of Daniel" is being touted as the riskiest new show of the year. It is also billed as the only show on television in which Jesus appears as a recurring character.

It's a drama with comedic aspects and is being kicked off Jan. 6 with back-to-back episodes. It is scheduled to air regularly Friday nights at 9 p.m. The cast also includes Ellen Burstyn and Susanna Thompson.

As NBC itself explains the show, it focuses on "an Episcopalian minister and father. He finds himself conversing with Jesus -- his mentor and friend -- who helps navigate family problems, church politics and even his nagging reliance on prescription painkillers."

Comedienne Phyllis Diller plays a member of Daniel Webster's flock.

NBC executives have been excited about "The Book of Daniel" for a long time, though the show failed to make its fall lineup. Dillahunt is said to play a "hip, modern Jesus."

"This challenging new series is our first announced drama for midseason as we continue to seek different out-of-the-box projects," NBC Entertainment President Kevin Reilly told the Hollywood Reporter.

So, what "edgy" new show will NBC have for us in late February? (e.g., six weeks after this show premieres.)

"The Webster family is rounded out by a 23-year-old homosexual Republican son, a 16-year-old daughter who is a drug dealer, and a 16-year-old adopted son who is having sex with the bishop's daughter. At the office, his lesbian secretary is sleeping with his sister-in-law."

Sounds realistic. The son isn't REALLY gay... He's just trying to shock and horrify his father. It didn't work, though, so he became a Republican.

>> "Myth" is never true. <<

Umm... you've been reading too many pamphlets and not enough literatute. Myth is that which is outside our understanding, but what gives shape to our world. Christianity is "true myth."

...but in a surprise ending, the family comes together for a road trip in which they seek out the Seventh Heaven family, beat the crap out of them and burn down their home.

Hey, as a Catholic, I thought Fr. Mulcahey was WONDERFUL... I think He, Radar and Klinger were the only ones I'd've been friends with... though I'd've liked Potter as a CO.

McLean Stevenson seemed like a kindred soul to me. Meanwhile Father Mulchey quietly tiptoed around too much instead of grabbing the bull (devil) by the horns and preaching Gospel. IMHO.

Richard Hooker (aka H. Richard Hornberger) who wrote the original MASH books, hated the television series.

It certainly got a lot lamer after Larry Linville (the true star who actually carried Alda's mega-ego) left.

Hawkeye was supposed to be Hooker.

The show kinda went downhill after Marshall Brickman (an early Woody Allen co-writer) left the writing staff. I never cared for the show. The movie was interesting, only because Altman directed it.

I've seen quite a few previews. The concept is pure 'revenge on red states' liberalism. They can't win elections or court cases so they create fictional worlds where they can win.

that's pretty much all of TV/movies nowadays.
That is one of the many reasons i stay away from MOST tv
and movies...
it's all about recruitment...so many gays/drug users
with their diseases how you gonna find more? Easy,
pretend lifes decisions have no consequences...
TV in general is trash...do something else with your time..

In this case...you and CS and motzman...I already clarified that in my first post to all of you.

The only folks I had seen to that point high fiving over how much you wished to view yet another sacrilege from Hollywood....and denigrating those who opposed such garbage.

Which oddly enough is not always the case. I just watched the Emily Rose movie and found it great and completely void of the usual Christian bashing garbage all too common in the media.

And one of you bashed Donohue and Wildmon claiming they had been critical of Charlie's Angels.

Well I was there 30 years ago during the late 70s as a teen and you can rest assured the level of crudeness and vulgarity in our culture has skyrocketed.

And the demonization of Christianity, it's clerics and preachers as well as it's adherents has gone from almost never to the rule 95% of the time in media content.

It's also the double standard...imagine a show that exists to denigrate Judaism ....not gonna happen....not even from Secularists.
