PHOENIX (AP) -- An Arizona bookstore owner charged in the firebombing of a government wildlife lab in Washington committed suicide in his jail cell Thursday, officials said.
William C. Rodgers, 40, of Prescott, Ariz., suffocated after placing a plastic bag over his head while in a one-person cell in Flagstaff, the Coconino County medical examiner said.
Rodgers was one of six people arrested earlier this month in connection with ecoterror attacks in Oregon and Washington in recent years.
He was accused of setting fire to the Agriculture Department's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services facility in Olympia, Wash., in 1998.
Federal court documents last week said Rodgers had been linked to a meeting of Earth Liberation Front members in western Colorado where the firebombing of a Colorado ski resort, one of the costliest ecoterror crimes in the U.S., was planned.

There are hidden contradictions in the minds of people who "love Nature" while deploring the "artificialities" with which "Man has spoiled 'Nature.' " The obvious contradiction lies in their choice of words, which imply that Man and his artifacts are not part of "Nature", but beavers and their dams are. But the contradictions go deeper than this prima-facie absurdity. In declaring his love for a beaver dam (erected by beavers for beavers' purposes) and his hatred for dams erected by men (for the purposes of men) the "Naturist" reveals his hatred for his own race, i.e. his own self-hatred. In the case,of "Naturists" such self-hatred is understandable; they are such a sorry lot. But hatred is too strong an emotion to feel toward them; pity and contempt are the most they rate. As for me, willy-nilly I am a man, not a beaver, and H. sapiens is the only race I have or can have. Fortunately for me, I like being part of a race made up of men and women, it strikes me as a fine arrangement and perfectly "natural."

Interesting. He died the same way he thought the Earth would die, from too much carbon dioxide. Idiot.

I wouldn't be surprised if this guy thought for sure he would never get caught, and when he did he couldn't deal with it and became distraught. Of course, you have to be unhinged in the first place to become an ecoterrorist.

I've always suspected these "ELF"s were nutty.
But it ALMOST sounds like he offed himself to protect the ELF org.
Maybe he really believed he would be tortured to reveal names.

What a nice gift item for all of our "PETA" and democRAT type "friends"!
I suggest plastic because they are reusable and it'll save a tree, really.
Maybe with a couple of packets of Grape Kool-Aide?

What a poser.....
What a feel good story !
He did do one thing right ... He saved the taxpaers a lot of money to spend building new homes and such with old growth trees vs feeding and housing his sorry butt in prison for the next 25 or so !!

I am not a morose person, but I would rather not be here. I don't have any reverence for life, only for the entities themselves. I would rather see a blank space where I am. This will sound like fruitcake stuff again but at least I wouldn't be harming anything.

"Bill"
He was 40.... That sounds very "adult", but of course only in 1995 - the primetime of alternative/grunge loserdom - he was a rockin' 30 years old, still down with "the scene".
Surely this must be categorized a teenage suicide, triggered by an epiphany of who he really was - an immature brat who had wasted his life pursuing false and useless passions, only to find his sad, unshaven face in a jail among criminals like himself.
Look at today's young rebels: the same spoiled, uninspired, medicated punks -- all out fighting Bush Oil and other synthetic enemies.
Doubtlessly, they will call this man, this 40-year-old boy, a "hero".

Hmmm, it doesn't actually say he was alone, only that he was in a one-person cell. Maybe it was suicide by overcrowding.

How long do you think it will be before the leftist whackjobs come out saying he was killed "for his beliefs" or some such rot like that? I bet it's already been mentioned on DU.
