Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) could barely conceal his anger.
"The Patriot Act expires on December 31, but the terrorist threat does not," he told reporters at the Capitol yesterday. "Those on the Senate floor who are filibustering the Patriot Act are killing the Patriot Act."
There was just one problem. Well, four problems, actually. Four of the 46 senators using the delaying tactic to thwart the USA Patriot Act renewal are members of Frist's party. It is a pesky, irritating fact for Republicans who are eager to portray the impasse as Democratic obstructionism, and a ready-made rejoinder for Democrats expecting campaign attacks on the issue in 2006 and 2008.
The four Republican rebels -- Larry E. Craig (Idaho), Chuck Hagel (Neb.), John E. Sununu (N.H.) and Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) -- have joined all but two Senate Democrats in arguing that more civil liberties safeguards need to be added to the proposed renewal of the Patriot Act.

LOL!
Yeah, I agree on the sunset provision. They can renew it, but I want it to sunset, so they have to renew it again.
Paranoia. I mean, Bill Clinton was president.
Twice.
Email that to Frist, it needs to be part of the Congressional Record.
You know, this works both ways; and these fools have been stabbing Bush in the back since he took office. All because of THEIR agendas, i.e. Hagel running for president, for one.
as well as with the press.
Try not to insult our intelligence; Bush TRIED to work with the press; see how well that's worked out?
Doesn't matter. Pick off the 4 Republicans and you still have 42 Democrats which will be enough to kill it. But as usual. The Dinasour Media will focus all the attention of the 4 Republicans so the Democrats get NONE of the PR fall out for killing the Patriot Act.
Frist should take away their offices.
I have 4 kids, each living or working in a large city.
I'm with you.
He isn't! YOU "think" about that!
His own crack!
That's because "normal" citizens aren't having international calls with terrorist organizations.
They are trying to do to him what they did to Nixon. Take something that has been done by all presidents and suddenly express outrage that such things go on (I'm not excusing what Nixon did but most Presidents before him were hardball Presidents. Most people just didn't know their Presidents said the F word, spied and paid off people).
The reason there is a NSA is because it is a spy agency. That's what it does. It spies on people. Suddenly liberals and some RINOs are incredulous.
I hope that Lisa can continue to be elected on the funds from her constituents. I will specifically tell the party that any funds I send nationally, not be used in her elections in Alaska.
" "I think the responsible thing to do at this point is to move forward with a three-month extension" of the current law. Murkowski, who inherited her seat from her father, said she has received angry phone calls and e-mails from non-Alaskans. "But I've got to listen to my constituents first," she said, and they have been "very supportive."
Hmmm... 42 Democrats, 4 Republicans. Stated another way, that's 91.3% Democrats, 8.7% Republicans. Yep, it sure is difficult to portray that as Democrat obstructionism...
Maybe Bush will correct this, we'll see. No excuse for the Senators, but this is the way it works. You have to either put a carrot in front of them or a good steady kick to the rear."
Bingo.
And even Washington was "intrusive". That's how Arnold was exposed.
"You answered your own question. He IS a Conservative. Big difference these days between a Conservative and a Republican."
No, he is not acting like a conservative. He is acting like a libertarian, and coming from Idaho, this doesn't surprise me, as his constituency has that kind of bent. But he does a great disservice to his country, and this is not a conservative vote, it's a libertarian one.
Wonder how much they got paid to vote against this Patriot Act? Can we check their records or swiss bank accounts?
You got it. A lot just DON'T get it.
