LOS ANGELES - Hundreds of people attended a star-studded funeral Tuesday for executed killer Stanley Tookie Williams in the violence-wracked South Los Angeles section where he founded the murderous Crips gang three decades ago.
Under heavy police presence, mourners including gang members flashing hand signs waited in line to enter the 1,500-seat Bethel AME Church. A big TV screen was set up in a parking lot for an overflow crowd. Vendors sold T-shirts with Williams picture.

No wonder.
"The public viewing of his body attracted a sometimes rowdy crowd that spilled into the street, backing up traffic. Marijuana smoke wafted through the air as sport utility vehicles with 20-inch rims cruised past, rap music blaring at full volume."
I respect your opinion, but disagree. This man was a cold-blooded killer. Neither you, me or anyone else could have guaranteed that he wouldn't kill again. Even in prison, there was a chance he could have snapped the neck of another inmate or prison guard (did you see those arms??!). Nineteen years of waiting was too much. Now, I can GUARANTEE we won't kill again.
Besides, Tookie was a fervent believer in the death penalty (he even carried it out himself) ... before it was his turn.
Pure crap.
To hell with the POS.
May he rot in hell.
Now, I can GUARANTEE HE won't kill again. (not "we" -- I'm a terrible typist!)
Paupers field would have made it even more fitting.
NJ decided he needed a parole hearing and he was released from prison.
He soon had a job in the cafeteria of one of our county high schools.
Sound okay to you?
His family bought him a bus ticket out of town but he was captured and is now awaiting trial.
Death is the only just punishment for what he did to that little girl. He kept her captive for several days before burying her alive.
The Tookster forfeited his right to exist as a citizen in any civilized society.
Several dozen gang members wearing blue attire associated with Crips gangs watched the funeral in the parking lot. One who identified himself as Killowatt the Third, age 33, estimated there were 20 to 30 Crips-affiliated gangs there to honor Williams.
Thats my role model, man. Thats the CEO of the Crips, he said
------And if this murderer is the best role model you have to look up to, then you will probably end up right where he is and a bunch of ignorant hollywood ass clowns ,along with the others that idolize him will attend your memorial. Do any of you think of the people he killed?
The way I understand it is the guards were afraid of him and he had threatened their families (via his gang) which is why he had special priviliges many on death row do not receive. A lot came out last week after he was dead and they no longer had to fear him.
Bet it was Jessie or Loonie Louie... he had on a silk suit?
I am sorry to see that there are several jerks on FR who "oppose the death penalty." I don't know what anyone can mean by such a sweeping statement. It is the sort of brainless principle that one would expect an airhead liberal to come out with.
Life is a struggle for survival, and evil is one of the things we must face, fight, and defeat. Otherwise life means nothing.
To be really pro-life, you must be for the death penalty for muderers.
The alternative is not only to lose the deterent value. Without a death penalty, there will be revenge killings. Already we are at that point. The whole reason for law is to avoid anarchy and vendettas. That is why the state must close murder cases with just executions.
I am also for forgiveness. If the criminal repents, I will forgive him. Then we can proceed with the execution.
I really could never fathom how a conservative could really believe that the State should be given the authority to execute its citizens. I understand the arguments on both sides of the issue...I do not oppose the death penalty for the reasons the oblivions who were out 'supporting Tookie' do, but for what I believe are core conservative precepts. The issue of the relationship between State and the individual or citizen.
My God, we get very upset (and rightly so) when the SCOTUS supported taking someone's land for eminent domain for the good of society, but we do agree with the State executions?
I do not see myself as a bleeding heart liberal for having this view.
That's what I was thinking. If Tookie had been such a changing force re gang involvement of youth, the gangs would be history. Doesn't look like he had much effect, but, like 21st century public education, he tried, so he deserves a pass.
Thanks for your reply. I didn't hear of this before now. This is sickening.
