Officials Fret Over Disappearance Of Explosives 150 Pounds Of Explosives Missing From Sandia-Affiliated Company

POSTED: 2:10 pm MST December 19, 2005 UPDATED: 2:17 pm MST December 19, 2005

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Officials discovered hundreds of pounds of explosives stolen in Albuquerque on Sunday.

One hundred fifty pounds of c4, 250 pound deta sheet, and 2,000 blasting caps were taken from a Sandia Labs employee's company.

Officials are very concerned about these thefts.

The items were stolen from a facility in Southwest Albuquerque.

Burglars apparently cut through steel bars to get at the goods.

C4 is a plastic explosive.

A deta sheet is another explosive that looks like a rubbery sheet of orange or green paper.

What makes deta sheets especially dangerous is that they can be hidden in books or letters. It cannot be spotted by a metal detector but are used by engineers for detonation.

Blasting caps are devices used to set off explosives.

If you know anything about the disappearance, please call police.

It was Javascript and I tried something different to make it a separate link. It comes up in my version of Firefox and opens the Media Player. Best way though is either to link through the article or paste the URL directly into the Windows Media Player.

Let me know if that works.

"Threat matrix stuff here...."
Sounds like something somewhere is going to go boom. Probably will be traced to some demo senator or house rep who wants to start blowing up republicans.

If you know anything about the disappearance, please call police. Big mistake. I once called the Albuquerque Police to report the theft of 3 firearms and several hundred rounds of ammunition from my vehicle. I was told to drop by a substation and file a report sometime in the next few days, 'cause they don't investigate property crimes. Apparently there's no revenue in that. The fastest way to get the attention of APD is to drive around not wearing your seatbelt.

Absolutely call the police. This is a little different than a property crime. As a matter of fact the best place to call would be Crime Stoppers at (505) 768-2285.

Thanks for the update CedarDave. I just checked in on the thread after having dinner and telling my wife that she was not to go to the mall or the super Walmart until after the new year (Just a precautionary measure, if this is as well organized as it appears on the surface the explosive have probably already left the state.)

About three months ago a parked trailer came up missing full of detonators? I can't find the thread, or know if it was found... was it found?

Great ploy!! A security measure that cuts down on $$ losses too!

Sorry..I am wound a little tight tonight...lol. Concerning the nuclear material, it sounds ominous coupled with these explosives missing. I would like to think that our intelligence agencies are all over this, but fear they are more focused on bringing down the President and shilling out top secret stuff to the NYT!

Thanks for the link to the video
This caught my attention:

"A federal Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agent says the explosives are enough to destroy a small building and that a small quantity of the explosives that were taken is frequently used by engineering firms to take out steel girders."

Not that a small building isn't bad enough, but steel girders sounds worse..(bridges, power plants, etc.)

ABQ Journal has the story up now (important enough that they are not charging their standard fee to view it). New information:

The materials were reported missing at 4 p.m. Sunday from Cherry Engineering Inc. Dixie said the company performs "research for the law enforcement community'' but declined to elaborate or disclose the location of the burglarized site. "It's not in the city proper. It's in Bernalillo County,'' Schultz said.

Cherry Engineering was federally certified as an explosives storage facility and was in compliance with ATF regulations, Dixie said. The site was inspected weekly, though it wasn't immediately known when the most recent visit occurred.

Company officials were cooperating with investigators. The missing amount is roughly big enough to fit into a truck, van or SUV, police spokesman John Walsh said. The explosives were stored in large rolls. "It looks like plumber's putty rolled up in wax paper,'' Walsh said.

The site was processed as a crime scene by ATF and police, and evidence was taken to a police crime lab for analysis. The FBI and New Mexico State Police also were participating in the investigation.

"I think it's clear from all the agencies that are represented here that this is something we're very concerned about,'' White said.

Yeah, this is a bad one. Whoever did it likely knew what they were doing and had a ready buyer for the merchandise.

Also think of this....compatability rules would not allow the storage of dets and bulk primary explosives so who every got it knew where each was......the deta sheet uses a very specific mini det . If every container was breached then yes it may be a outsider but if only say 1.1 and 1.4 containers were opened then .....who knows. I believe that the display of such markings is not required for security purposes on the exterior of the containers/bunkers any more. Or at a minimum the highest type such as 1.1 or special hazmat markings such as no water or foam only etc are all that's required.

LEO's will shake down every employee real good based on that alone IMHO.

Guess the senate isn't too concerned, they are still filibustering over the Patriot Act and the spending bill because of ANWR being in it... the dems are going to bluster us right into a nuked city and then they will still turn around and blame the President.
