Senators need votes to remain employed also. Make sure yours, even if you know he is against this legislation will lose your vote if he goes against this bill. The reason this bill is moving through the house as intended is because a lot of Americans are dialing their phones and letting their Representives in the house know that they are watching and that they vote. Take my word for it. Their damn feet are to the fire.

The reporters who cannot tell the difference between a rifle and a shotgun are also too stupid to tell a wall from a fence.

"If they can spend $3 billion rebuilding and reinforcing the levees in NO, they can build a decent fence along the border for about the same."

I'll see you and raise you. How about the $286 billion highway bill, which included at least $24 billion in pork-barrel projects?

Whatever it took to build an effective wall, it would be a bargain and save money. To Congress: enough of the hot air; now do it.

Tell that to India. They are putting up an even longer fence.

The real cost comes if we do not build the wall. How much does it cost to educate all the children of these illegal immigrants in "spanish". How much does it cost on a nightly basis for all the illegal immigrants "hitting" on our emergency rooms. How much for the food stamps. How much for the anchor babies. Add it up!!! The wall will be very cheap in comparison.

"Only supposed to cover parts of the border. Will just change the traffic flow to different spots. Means nothing."

Sure, it needs to run the entire length of the border. But as Tancredo stated, this is an incremental first step. Just to get this commitment on paper from the House (we'll see if we can get enough heat on the Senate to have it passed there) is a major step forward. It means a great deal.

They will probably end up with ladders at twenty five mile intervals.

"'Mr. Bush... tear down that wall.'

"If the wall is built, that will be the refrain."

Maybe. But my retort will be: "Mr. Bush . . . complete that wall!"

I wouldn't get too worked up over them. The defeatists are losing. They're just trying to save face however they can, but it's not working out too well for them.

The Great Wall of America will be every bit as effective as The Great Wall of China.

The 260-159 voice vote on an amendment

It was a VOICE vote. How can they possibly know the Yeas and the Nayes? I went to check the Roll Call to see how the congresscritter from my district RINO Jim Kolbe voted and I can't see a vote on this. I went back to the story and saw it was a voice vote. That may explain it.

. . . it postpones indefinitely the reforms that country needs to make.

The problem is a corrupt Mexico, not the illegal immigrants. While a few talk of taking over the Southwest, in reality the majority don't want anything to do with that. I suspect that if Mexico became more like the US we wouldn't have a illegal immigration problem. Which begs the question, is a wall the wrong place to invest time and money? I'm not arguing for Mexican foriegn aid. I'd like to see some real reforms in Mexico. Somehow the US needs to induce some serious changes in Mexico without driving them towards Chavez.

How many billions will this cost?

Given that they're only doing part of the border, I doubt it'll top one billion. To do the entire border should cost somewhere in the $3-5 billion range. Even if it costs $10 billion, it's still a very small amount of money for something this important.

I'm for added security in conjunction with the wall, land mines scattered about...but hey, that's just me.

It actually did work in China, and the only time it was ever breached was someone from the INSIDE that opens the gate (so in the end, it didn't work too well).

Next thing you'll get are corrupt border officials opening the gates for a few illegal immigrants, but it will stop the bulk of the illegals.
