Lest you get carried away with today's good news from Iraq, consider what's happening next door in Iran. The wild pronouncements of the new Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, have gotten sporadic press ever since he called for Israel to be wiped off the map. He subsequently amended himself to say that Israel should simply be extirpated from the Middle East map and moved to some German or Austrian province. Perhaps near the site of an old extermination camp?

I would think a few well-placed smart bombs would do the job simply enough.
Let's hope it won't take the loss of one of our cities to propel us into action.
Bush is a student of history, and as such he acts in ways that are historical. He gives little thought to the way he is treated in contemporary assessments. While he makes many accomodations to political reality, for the most part he strives for transformational policy thrusts. For those reasons, I believe if we need to do something re: Iran, Bush is the one to do it.
The thing is, large-scale military action against Iran might induce our domestic moonbats to extreme lengths. I'm serious--they're enraged and powerless and desperate, and hate our country. Who knows how they'll react. We live in one of the critical crossroads of history.

I believe Bush is president at this time in our history because we need a strong leader. We'll see if he continues to look out for the United States. A democratic president would hand us lock stock and barrel over to the UN to decide what happens to us.

If push comes to shove with Iran, I don't think they'll be much of a problem. The 2nd admendment is the best of all. :-)
I believe there is more going on behind the scenes - it's not just one 'loose cannon' in Iran....
Russia is deeply upset about the new balance of power in the mid-east and is probably calling the shots.
It's a planned test of the world (=WEST )as for how far Iran can go....

I have considered that. However, the Israelis are caught between a rock and a hard spot. They cannot accomplish this without our help and if we help them we might as well go in and get the job done because we are going to be blamed by everyone, especially the libs in our own country. The reason I say this, is that the Israelis cannot make it to Iran and back without flying over other countries. They would have either have to get permission or fly around these countries thereby not having the fuel to get back. Here's where the U.S. enters but that also negates the surprise factor. So, what to do. Okay, we are back sitting on our thumbs and considering bringing congressional action in the T.Owens football controversy. Geesh.

IMHO the next president will have little choice but to deal with IRAQ's neighbor, militarily.
The US should give Israel a range of medium missiles to counter anything that Iran can come up with , and Israel should come out in the open about it's nuke arsenal and announce a broad target list that will be launched on immediately if any attack is detected. They want to all die too? Let them chew on that....
Bush will not do this on his own. Just like Iraq, he will seek congressional approval and on this issue everyone will wimp out. Reelection means more to them then world saftey.

They'd better git 'er done before the Ruskies get those state of the art G-A missle batteries set up for Iran.
We hear tell that not much of anything, up to and including the F-117, can hide from or outrun those things.
And our pilots who get shot down do NOT want to be captured by the Iranians, methinks.
Can't speak for the rest of the world but our leaders in congress are too busy dealing with more weighty matters such as whether it should be christmas tree or holiday tree.
Charlie wants a whole new war. He's really giving neo-cons a bad name. I like to watch him on TV, nobody (except maybe Britt), is better at cutting down stupid liberal talking heads, but he needs to relax a little.
There is no question that Iran will lose, and lose badly. The only question is how much damage we will allow them to do.
This Ahmednajeb is clearly nuts, or he wants us to believe that he is nuts for some arcane reason. Either way, the advantage to us of these increasingly belligerent and extreme statements is that a regime-change attack becomes easier to sell to US public opinion. It's almost like he is goading us to attack him. Perhaps he believes that our military and political commitments in Iraq and political constraints at home will stay our hand. That is a dangerous miscalculation.
Anyone any idea when the 'red line' might be crossed? March 2006? Or later? Are we going to see the same kind of build-up to war we saw with Iraq, or surprise strikes?
