"Dutch MP defies Muslim pressure"
By Jane Beresford
Producer, Taking a Stand, BBC Radio 4
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Ayaan Hirsi Ali wanted to shape her own future
What turns a devout young Muslim woman into one of Islam's most outspoken critics?
For the Somali-born Dutch MP Ayaan Hirsi Ali, it was a long journey that started with an arranged marriage.
She sought refuge in the Netherlands on her way to her new husband's home in Canada.
"I wanted a chance at a life where I could shape my own future," she says.
"I knew the risks - being disowned or being shunned by my father and the rest of my family. I took those risks and I don't regret it."
Hirsi Ali describes the anti-US attacks of 11 September 2001 as pivotal to her questioning of Islam."

Iran: We can put Israel in 'eternal coma'
The 1938 Updates are coming thick and fast. From YnetNews, with thanks to Gabrielle Goldwater:
Iran threatens again: Iran's Defense Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar said Wednesday that the country and its allies could put Israel "in an eternal coma," like that of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, if Israel attempts to attack the Muslim republic.
"Israel does not have the courage to attack Iran, and if it commits such a big mistake, the defenders of Islamic Iran will put Israel in an eternal coma like Sharon," he said in a television appearance.
Najjar, who branded the United States and Israel as "the great and little Satan, who are using psychological war to intimidate Iran," was responding to recent statements by Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz, who said Israel may attack Iran if diplomatic measures to neutralize its nuclear armaments efforts fail.
"The state of Israel will not be able to accept Iranian armament, and must prepare to defend itself. The Iranian president's regime supports terror in the Middle East by providing terror organizations with rockets that threaten Israel, money and knowledge," Mofaz said at the Herzliya Conference Saturday.

NSA Surveillance Saves American Lives, Bush says
By Steven Donald Smith
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, Jan. 25, 2006 President Bush today reiterated the need for a terrorist surveillance program to save American lives and win the war on terrorism.

"I gave a speech to the men and women who are dedicating their lives to serving the American people and preventing this country from being attacked again," Bush said following his closed-door session at the National Security Agency at Fort Meade, Md. He said the agency "is playing a crucial part in the war on terror."
In the weeks following the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, Bush authorized the agency to gather information on suspected terrorists by eavesdropping on certain international phone calls originating from within the United States. "This information has helped prevent attacks and save American lives," he said.
Bush said that it was important to understand the intentions of America's enemies before they strike, and the NSA surveillance is helping "connect the dots" about these intensions.
"When terrorist operatives are here in America communicating with someone overseas, we must understand what's going on if we're going to do our job to protect the people," Bush said. "The safety and security of the American people depend on our ability to find out who the terrorists are talking to, and what they're planning."
Bush also spoke about the legalities involved in the spying program, and the need to protect civil liberties.
"This terrorist surveillance program includes multiple safeguards to protect civil liberties, and it is fully consistent with our nation's laws and constitution," he said.
Bush has said previously that he briefed members of Congress about the NSA surveillance and that they authorized its use. "I have the authority, both from the Constitution and the Congress, to undertake this vital program," he said.
"In the long run, we can be confident in the outcome of this struggle, because we've seen the power of freedom to defeat tyranny and terror before," Bush said. "The American people expect me to protect their lives and their civil liberties, and that's exactly what we're doing with this program."

Quite the list there, All4one!
Praying very hard, Crabbie.
Thanks, Lucy.
TMers take it seriously too.
ROCKEFELLER: No. I mean, this question is asked a thousand times and I'll be happy to answer it a thousand times. I took a trip by myself in January of 2002 to Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Syria, and I told each of the heads of state that it was my view that George Bush had already made up his mind to go to war against Iraq, that that was a predetermined set course which had taken shape shortly after 9/11.
"Hamas apparent winner in Palestinian vote: Fatah official"
Not surprised here.
Bush is to make a statement at 10.15EST.
No doubt Hamas will be in there somewhere. This is a huge development.
I agree, it's a huge development.
Perhaps NOW we can stop sending funds to Palestine?
Dawn anti-terror raids in Brussels
BRUSSELS Federal police raided 20 homes in the Brussels region at about 5am on Thursday in an anti-terrorism operation.
The raids took place in various Brussels suburbs, such as Molenbeek, police told news agency Belga.
Ordered by investigating judge Daniel Fransen, the raids were focused on activities around the Belgian Islamic Centre, based in Molenbeek. Raids were conducted at the Islamic centre itself.
Two men were arrested and several computers were seized, news service VRT reported.
Brussels police spokesman Glenn Audenaert said the investigation targeted Muslim extremists, not Muslim terrorists. However, he also said Muslim extremism could be a fertile breeding ground for Islamic terrorism.(snip)

***Scratching my head over that last paragraph***
"Perhaps NOW we can stop sending funds to Palestine?"
I'm sure that particular gravy train is screeching to a halt as we speak. The Palestinians have voted Hamas in becuase they are desperate to see an improvement in their situation. It kind of reminds me of the German people voting for Hitler in the 1930's.
This news conference is a clear message that the White House is bracing for some kind of terrorist activity. I'm not sure why the threat level hasn't been raised, but clearly, there's consternation visible here.
Perhaps a Valentine's Day Massacre?
(shudder)
an office drone today, any details on the conference?
Conference is over.
With everything going on in the world, the reporters were most interested in knowing about Jack Abramoff.
Go figure.
