The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

He hasn't been heard from in more than a year, but one news site reports that it has obtained a new tape of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

But U.S. officials are skeptical of the report, CBS News reports.

The story from Pajhwok Afghan News, dated Tuesday, describes a new 30-minute tape with a message from Taliban commander Mullah Dodallah and the al Qaeda leader, according to the IntelCenter, a U.S. government contractor that does work for intelligence agencies.

Kazakhs Hunt for 'Radioactive Dollars' (Kazakhstan - 1/25/06)

ALMATY (Reuters) - is on a nationwide hunt for dozens of "radioactive dollars" circulating in the country's financial system.

The Kazakh central bank said in a letter to financial institutions the radiation level of the U.S. dollar notes was 100 times above normal. A Kazakh citizen brought them into the country in November, it said.

***Cuba Calls for Enhanced Ties with Iran (1/25/06)***

Tehran, Jan 25, IRNA Iran-Cuba-Ties

Cuban Minister of Foreign Relations Felipe Perez Roque in Havana on Wednesday praised the trend of increasing bilateral ties with Iran in all fields, and called for further cooperation.

At a meeting with Iranian Ambassador to Cuba Ahmad Edrissian, Perez promised he would pay a visit to Iran in the near future.

He said that he was bringing with him an invitation by Cuban President Fidel Castro for his Iranian counterpart, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, to attend the summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) that is to be held in Havana at a date still to be fixed.

The minister said that Western states applied dual policies to developing states on issues such as the development and use of nuclear energy and affirmed Iran's legal right to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

He also voiced his country's strong support for Iran's nuclear activities.

He stressed that the practice of certain countries of applying double standards on countries that wish to modernize and avail of modern technology cannot be allowed to continue.

We've played this particular game before, with slightly different participants. The last time we stood toe to toe with the Russians in a blockade until the other guy blinked. Looks like Castro is looking for round two. If Iran get's their nukes into Cuba, the problem of not having a delivery vehicle that can reach will be solved.
