WASHINGTON - After months of resistance, the White House has agreed to accept Sen. John McCain's call for a law specifically banning cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment of foreign suspects in the war on terror, several congressional officials said Thursday. The congressional officials spoke on condition of anonymity, saying they did not want to pre-empt an expected announcement later in the day at the White House, possibly by President Bush and McCain. ...

Thank you very much....I haven't been able to follow things for a while..Christmas stuff.
I guess McCain has shown that he has WAY too much power..and this will just inspire him more to think that he can get elected WITHOUT the right wing of the Republican party..blech
You don't get it. All this means is that the GOP realizes it can't appeat to stand "for" torture, so all that will happen is that we will 100% "outsource" our interrogation to imaginative allies. This may actually result in more information.
Banning torture is leftist?
We'll just outsource to some inventive allies like the Egyptians, who have, shall we say, unorthodox methods of interrogation. I'd bet this results in more information, not less.
Honest, character, accountability, straight talk.
ROFLMAO.
I'll say this for you, even in that dream world you're living in, you've got nerve.
He's a lying crook who cheated on his first wife.
And a major league manipulator, media whore.
All anybody needs to know about this man is that the MSM loves him.
Thanks for the information on this "vote."
Over this, damn right I do.
Wow, I get it now. You forgot the sarcasm tag. Very funny.
This bill will work about as good as the McLame campaign finance bill, which was and is a complete failure. It did the opposite of what he told us it would do.
And, McLame does not have the honesty to come out and tell us that it is not working. Yeah, he is the kind of guy we all need to look up to /sarcasm>
Calling all Arizona Freepers! What happened to that recall election petition for McCain that was dropped after 9/11? We need that desperately right now. And send a message to the DC subversives that they were elected to represent the people of this country, not the terrorists.
Then you haven't a clue. No one in Washington (unless the ultra-anti-war left) can vote against a defense bill or veto one. That would destroy Bush and probably damage the GOP's chances in 2006, because they would be tarred with his "Bush-vetoed-body-armor." The clever trick by McLame was to get this attached to a DEFENSE bill. Any other bill, Bush could have vetoed it. Nope, not something any credible leader can do.
"McCain Torture Ban"
I agree to this ban. I am tired of being tortured by hearing about McCain's abject stupidty.
With this provision, this isn't a defense bill, it's a freaking white flag.
I don't care what you call it. In a year, we'll still be processing prisoners and the troops will be armed. But to have vetoed this would have been beyond political suicide. The ONLY things Bush had going for him were the WOT and the economy, and that would have destroyed his WOT credentials. It would have in one measure given the Dems 100% recovery from their death spiral. To veto ANY defense appropriation bill is not debatable politically, for anyone.
McCain is pathetic idiot. He is basically a Pat Buchanan with political power.
What we need is a law that requires cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment of foreign suspects in war on terror.
I can only speak for myself. And I'd've vetoed it. On national TV. In prime time.
