Why did the WH do this?

The legal term of torture means to cause bodily organ failure and is already illegal. As well, I've never seen ANYTHING to suggest we engage in that type of torture.

The "new" definitions seem to include things like humiliation and uncomfortable positions like standing for a long time.

I'm stunned.

Perhaps you should keep your powder dry and wait and see what the White House agreed to.

I think the Yahoo Title is a bit misleading. The agreement is coming but not quite yet unless Yahoo got an exclusive that it is a done deal.

I'd like to know what the definition of torture is, in this context.

I just pray that the House grows a pair ...

House backs ban on interrogation torture

WASHINGTON, Dec. 15 (UPI) -- The U.S. House of Representatives has joined the Senate in strongly endorsing a ban on interrogation torture proposed by Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain.

By a 308 to 122 vote, House members adopted a non-binding resolution that would prohibit "cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment" of anyone in the custody of the U.S. government.

The vote specifically instructed House negotiators to include McCain's exact language in the fiscal 2006 defense appropriations bill, the Washington Post reported.

Earlier this year, the Senate voted 90 to 9 vote in support of McCain's legislation.

Wednesday's House vote was a challenge to President Bush, who has been aggressively pushing to create exceptions for CIA operatives and to water down McCain's language to keep it from limiting interrogators' options.

However, Bush has vowed to strike down any bill that would limit his authority to wage war on terrorism.

This doesn't have to be a bad thing. As much as we'd like to see these beasts tortured thoroughly, I think it's worthwhile to show the world that the US still expects its soldiers to maintain their humanity.
It also says that we believe our way is the best way, and we don't have to stoop to ugly methods to maintain our freedoms.
Finally, for the serious people working for us in the field, these new standards won't prevent them from doing their jobs. Those guys usually don't work with an audience, anyway. It's really not a bad thing that the US goes on record saying that we don't accept torture as a policy.

"There is a cancer on the Republican party and its name is John McCain."

McCain just one man. He cannot accomplish anything without enablers and we have way too many enablers in the party. To me those who enable him on things like this and CFR are just as disappointing.

Not nice.

I made that descision when he first showed up on the sceene. You most likely made it a long time ago as well. Something to note is that this isn't law yet...

The big problem I see with this is the attempted definition of "torture" I doubt that we will see the final definition for some years as the courst start interpreting this thing.

I've only heard it discussed on television and it sounded to me like it included stuff that isn't legally torture. I know it included not humiliating them.

But yes, we need to see what exactly is included in the bill.

I should have added, since the legal definition of torture is to cause body organ failure, and it's already illegal, then why we needed another bill is a mystery.
