A Day in the Life of President Bush (photos): 12.14.05

President Bush delivered the fourth of four speeches on Iraq. Today's speech was given at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in DC. Video of the speech is available at CSPAN. Speaking about this week's elections in Iraq, President Bush told the audience, "We are living through a watershed moment in the story of freedom." Text of today's speech.

Brit Hume, Fox News, interviewed President Bush at length. The interview is being broadcast now, and should be rebroadcast in Brit's "Special Report" on replay tonight.

Addressing the Heritage Foundation, Condi Rice said, "The world has shirked its duty to help prosecute Saddam Hussein. The international community's effective boycott of Saddam's trial is only harming the Iraqi people, who are now working to secure the hope of justice and freedom that Saddam long denied them. ... I am sad to say that the international community has barely done anything to help Iraq prosecute Saddam Hussein."

QUOTE: "There's only one way the terrorists can prevail: if we lose our nerve and leave before the job is done. And that is not going to happen on my watch."

"We are living through a watershed moment in the story of freedom. Most of the focus now is on this week's elections -- and rightly so. Iraqis will go to the polls to choose a government that will be the only constitutional democracy in the Arab world. Yet we need to remember that these elections are also a vital part of a broader strategy for protecting the American people against the threat of terrorism."

"Victory will be achieved by meeting certain clear objectives: when the terrorists and Saddamists can no longer threaten Iraq's democracy, when the Iraqi security forces can protect their own people, and when Iraq is not a safe haven for terrorists to plot attacks against our country."

"Some of the most irresponsible comments about manipulating intelligence have come from politicians who saw the same intelligence we saw, and then voted to authorize the use of force against Saddam Hussein. These charges are pure politics. They hurt the morale of our troops. Whatever our differences in Washington, our men and women in uniform deserve to know that once our politicians vote to send them into harm's way, our support will be with them in good days and bad, and we will settle for nothing less than complete victory."

"... when the history of these days is written, it will tell how America once again defended its own freedom by using liberty to transform nations from bitter foes to strong allies. And history will say that this generation, like generations before, laid the foundation of peace for generations to come."

My take on Rep. John Murtha, the 37-year Marine Corps veteran who is assailing US policy in Iraq: the dems drew straws among those least likely to have their patriotism questioned and sent him out to Microphone City to blast, and politicize, Bush's winning strategy.

US calls Iranian leader's comments 'outrageous'. The White House assailed as "outrageous" Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's comments dismissing the Holocaust as a myth and saying Israel should be cut from the Middle East [and suggesting the Europeans should make a place for Israel in Europe]. "I think all responsible leaders in the international community recognize how outrageous such comments are," spokesman Scott McClellan said of the hardline leader's latest outburst against Israel.

At the president's speech, listening as Bush outlines the strategy for victory in Iraq during remarks on the War on Terror at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington D.C.

I am getting really tired of the person who posts photos of the president at Yahoo! on most Wednesdays. I give the following as just one of dozens of examples of my complaint.

Former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein gestures during his trial, 06 December 2005. US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice accused the world community of boycotting the trial of deposed Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein and doing little to help prosecute him.

Odd corner of the news: "The Republican chairman of a special House panel investigating the government's response to Hurricane Katrina decided Wednesday to reject, at least for now, a proposal to subpoena the White House for documents detailing internal communications before and after the storm hit on Aug. 29. But lawmakers agreed to subpoena the Pentagon for similar Katrina-related documents if Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld refuses to immediately turn them over or explain why he cannot."

All clear.

Hi Tx. Good to see you.

It's so gratifying to see our W out there and getting air time to press his agenda.

I watched the replay of MSNBC's Brian Williams interviewing W last night. Rather than understanding the significance of asking questions of current and historical importance to a sitting president, Brian seemed enthralled with the proximity to power granted to him for the day. And almost every question or comment was a dig. Brit's interview, what I have heard of it while posting today, is so much more real journalism.
