Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page has been honored by Queen Elizabeth II - but the award was for his work with poor Brazilian children rather than his music.
The 61-year-old rocker went to Buckingham Palace on Wednesday to receive an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, or OBE, from the queen.
Page said he was overwhelmed to be given the accolade, recalling how he first became involved with Brazilian children in 1994 when fighting broke out among street gangs while he was in Rio de Janeiro promoting an album.
"At that time in Rio the sun wasn't shining. The army was going into the favelas (shantytowns) and I heard about the plight of the street children," he told reporters.
Page joined forces with British charity Task Brazil and set up a safe house, which has supported more than 300 children. Task Brazil offers medical and psychological support, food, clothing and job training.
"I think when you're faced with a plight that's inescapable, and there's something you can do about it, you hope you can make a difference," Page said.
Page was a member of the '60s band The Yardbirds before helping found Led Zeppelin.

Perhaps, but I can name 20 - 30 Jimmy Page songs off the top of my head. I'd be lucky to sqeak 5 from Jeff Beck! Better guitarist, perhaps. Better song writer, nope!
I bought all their albums in the early to mid 70's and played them till the grooves wore out.
I love Bo! Play his stuff all the time. I have been a professional guitarist for over 30 years, and I know a lot about all these guys. Yes, Page has gotten more "aclaim" and has had more "pop" popularity, but Beck is a master musician, and is recognized as such by all his peers. I've played on several cds by a metal guitar virtuoso, playing pedal steel, of all things. I took him to see Jeff Beck on tour a few years ago, and we just shook our heads in amazement! The beauty of his playing, the undeniable technique,,,What more can I say? Yes Page was/is more popular, in a pop sense. But he can not come close to Beck in ability. And, again, I don't dislike Page, I just recognize Beck's superiority.
How about Vai and Satriani?
They're both great players, but I don't think they have the abilty to create emotional music as well as Beck. I have all their cds, and I love them. here's a link to the guitarist with whom I've recorded. There are sound clips. he's playing at the Allen theater this weekend with full orchestra. Lots of talent but Jimmy Page has more soul in his little finger. Fretboard gymnastics does not usually make for a great song.

Pretty obscure. But I've done several jingles here in Cleveland. None sold, but I was just a hired gun studio muscician. I mean, I can name some unknown people too, like Dave Firkins, but what does that prove? Page has been enormously successful, despite the witchcraft stuff, and I enjoy his music very much. but he's just not as good as Beck, or maybe even Batteau!
Oops! Didn't mean Dave, it's Mike. He's so obscure even I can't even remember his name! Great player though.
