Queen Honors Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page

Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page has been honored by Queen Elizabeth II - but the award was for his work with poor Brazilian children rather than his music.

The 61-year-old rocker went to Buckingham Palace on Wednesday to receive an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, or OBE, from the queen.

Page said he was overwhelmed to be given the accolade, recalling how he first became involved with Brazilian children in 1994 when fighting broke out among street gangs while he was in Rio de Janeiro promoting an album.

"At that time in Rio the sun wasn't shining. The army was going into the favelas (shantytowns) and I heard about the plight of the street children," he told reporters.

Page joined forces with British charity Task Brazil and set up a safe house, which has supported more than 300 children. Task Brazil offers medical and psychological support, food, clothing and job training.

"I think when you're faced with a plight that's inescapable, and there's something you can do about it, you hope you can make a difference," Page said.

Page was a member of the '60s band The Yardbirds before helping found Led Zeppelin.

Very cool. Brazilian street kids have a rotten existence, and it's good to see someone like Jimmy Page quietly lend a hand.

Jimmy Page is an all-around good guy, unlike most entertainers.

Jimmy Page, by far the most talented guitar player to have graced this planet. His versatility and range of talents far surpasses his peers. Nice to know he is a good guy too.

Stairway to Heaven--the Greatest Rock and Roll song ever.

Thanks for the link. There are still many people who don't know what goes on in Brazil. They just think of Mardi Gras, string bikinis, and beaches.

And rock'n'roll wise neither of these pretenders could shine the shoes of Bo Diddley!

I know what you mean. I've always thought that Jimmy Page was brilliant and innovative, but a rather sloppy player. And frankly, I always thought that Led Zep was one of the best examples of a band whos talent and artistry where the whole was greater than the sum of the parts. Plant was a terrific blues singer. Page an excellent guitarist. Bonham an excellent drummer. And (the forgotten member, and IMHO, the most talented) J.P. Jones, an excellent bassist, keyboardist, and arranger (though I never really cared for his songwriting that much). But Led Zep transcended their individual talents, making a blend that was far greater, and more innovative, than I believe anything that was done before in their genre, and anything that the individuals have done since.

Anybody else remember the classic words of Jeff Beck at one of the R&R Hall of Fame induction ceremonies?

"Rod (Stewart) and I have a love/hate relationship. He loves me, and I hate him!"

Still, there aren't many better blues guitarist/singer combos than Beck/Stewart... Anyone remember "Old Man River" or "People Get Ready?"

Wow!
