As the US Congress considers some tough immigration proposals to tighten the entry process into the country, a new study shows that of the 35.2 million foreign-born population in America in 2005, around 1.4 million are Indians.
There are 35.2 million foreign-born people with the number of illegal immigrants anywhere between 9 to 13 million, according to the study by the Centre for Immigration Studies.
"The 35.2 million immigrants living in the country in March 2005 is the highest number ever recorded -- two-and-a-half times the 13.5 million during the peak of the last great immigration wave in 1910," said by Steven Camarota, director of research for the Centre.
Of the 35.2 million foreign born immigrants in the United States in 2005, South Asia would account for 1.8 million with India taking the bulk of this figure with 1.411 millions and accounting for a citizenship rate of nearly 34 per cent.
About 12.1 per cent of the current US population was born in another country, the highest percentage since 1920, according to Census figures.
Overall Mexico will come away with the highest number of foreign immigrants at nearly 11 million which will be followed by East Asia, South Asia (India) and Vietnam in South East Asia.
Statistics show that as far as India is concerned, the period 2000 to 2005 showed a sharp upswing in the number of immigrants at nearly 460,000 for the 5-year period.
The pre-1980 statistics show an immigrant population number for India at 170,000, rising to 209,000 between 1980 and 1989 and to 573,000 between 1990 and 1999.
Not me. We are tilted way too heavy to the 3rd world and have been for the last 40 years. Mexico sends us the most legal immigrants due to family reunification policies. I would cut off all legal immigration from Muslim nations after I have seen the French and Australian rioting by the sons of Allah.
My legal immigration policy would be to admit only English speakers with some education and try to get in more Europeans since they planned and built this nation. Along with blacks and Indians. Hispanics did not build America. The Hispanic population was infinitesimal prior to the 1950s. On the mainland USA it was 1% in 1950
Are HI-B's counted as immigrants?
____________
My guess is 70% of them get green cards after slaving away as H1B for 5 years. The whole point of being an H1B is to immigrate here. Indians are the most numerous but other foreigners too.
There are 3.6 million visa overstays that the government (that they will admit to) cannot find, wandering "somewhere" in these United States. Visas and Green cards are handed out with no vetting, or poor clearance (witness, 9/11). We even hire illegals as border agents. NO one is minding the store. NO ONE.
I agree with you on the border situation entirely. It is quite sickening to see the law being flouted like this for short-term political gains.
Anything illegal here?
Can't say...maybe.
Rather than importing more people (and many immigrants come from hostile countries), we should start encouraging people to emigrate.
Actully, I sit in the front of the kayak, and my husband sits in the back, (so I can take photos) and HE paddles while I shoot pix. Sometimes he gets me a little closer to a photo op than I had planned!! LOL
susie
My best guess would be that the 1.4 million does not include folks on visa's and this number is strictly immigrants, both legal and illegal.
Which was the point I was attempting to make. We have to guess (and I don't like that).
... would be that the 1.4 million does not include folks on visa's and this number is strictly immigrants, both legal and illegal.
Now see, my definition of "strictly immigrants" does not include illegal aliens.
Death to lousy reporters! :^)
Try working for one!!! If you're a white female of intelligence, you're screwed. I have been horribly discriminated against, both by Indian males with degrees from the University of Bombay. about 30 years difference in their age too, but both of them were the most sexist chauvinist pigs that I ever had to work for. Until my last job (but that was my coworkers, not my boss!)
I experienced the same thing from men from El Salvador. Just different cultures. The only difference is I was the boss. They couldn't stand the fact that they worked for a female. After a long battle they realized I was not the enemy and we actually got along fine. Took awhile though.
Mmmmmmm.... Curry!
The above questions are out of interest, not argument. Basically, I am in favor of legal immigration as long as it is selective and targeted to those willing to contribute to our nation and accept our values. However, I am concerned that too much is driven by a demand for cheaper labour. Americans willing and able to do the jobs available at a market wage should have priority, even if they are past a certain unrealistic age.
Well, my experience with Indian immigrants is that though they're hard worker, they really have no life whatsoever. They don't understand that by 7 pm, most people have left the office :) We had to deal with a few from THE major communication company from San Jose (you know the one) and the entire engineering staffs are Indians. Those guys would expect me to reply back to them during weekends.
I don't think it's all that productive. Working 70 hours a week, your productivity goes down, way down, because you're too tired to think clearly. I work for a startup company (well, *used* to be a startup company, now it's not in startup mode) and did just that for a few months during hte initial years and it sucked.
"The "college" they graduate from in India is a technical institute and many programmers don't have any experience in the languages they profess to know."
I think US universities have a preference to them becaue they "speak English". Nearly most of them are useless in the lab in terms of hardware problems (i.e. they keep thinking it's software, and it's software... and never outside of that realm). It's hard trying to convince them to look outside of the box.
It's probably more of a cultural thing, but I have also noted that Indian femals are actually more aggressive in the work place in terms of "political" issues than their mael counterpart. they probably have to be in order to survive.
When I was in school in Kansas, the Indians would gather together doing homework by themselves, they NEVER EVER worked with someone else that aren't Indian. And, as far as I can see, they copy the homeworks from each other and turn them in that way. I think I find similar "cliques" with Chinese/Koreans too, but not to the extent with Indians.
BTW, do your Indian colleagues wear a lot of perfume? Man, one of my professors does... he drown himself in some nasty men's perfume every day, you can smell him about 100 yards away. That drives me nuts, covering body odors (mostly year-round curry) with perfume actually makes it worse.
I'm surprised you actually managed to sell your house :) I sure as hell woudln't buy a house that has 3 ice cream truck parked as a neighbor if i see the trucks.
Well yes, but the population of the US is more than 2.5 times what it was in 1910. The 1910 census showed a population of around 91.8 Million. The 2004 census shows a population of 293.7 Million. Thus the fraction of immigrants is lower now than in 1910. I suspect the fraction of those immigrants who were/are illegal is much higher now.
My grandfather, or his biological parents, (he was adopted) may have been among those 1910 immigrants, we don't really know anything about his adoptive or biological parents.
