As the US Congress considers some tough immigration proposals to tighten the entry process into the country, a new study shows that of the 35.2 million foreign-born population in America in 2005, around 1.4 million are Indians.
There are 35.2 million foreign-born people with the number of illegal immigrants anywhere between 9 to 13 million, according to the study by the Centre for Immigration Studies.
"The 35.2 million immigrants living in the country in March 2005 is the highest number ever recorded -- two-and-a-half times the 13.5 million during the peak of the last great immigration wave in 1910," said by Steven Camarota, director of research for the Centre.
Of the 35.2 million foreign born immigrants in the United States in 2005, South Asia would account for 1.8 million with India taking the bulk of this figure with 1.411 millions and accounting for a citizenship rate of nearly 34 per cent.
About 12.1 per cent of the current US population was born in another country, the highest percentage since 1920, according to Census figures.
Overall Mexico will come away with the highest number of foreign immigrants at nearly 11 million which will be followed by East Asia, South Asia (India) and Vietnam in South East Asia.
Statistics show that as far as India is concerned, the period 2000 to 2005 showed a sharp upswing in the number of immigrants at nearly 460,000 for the 5-year period.
The pre-1980 statistics show an immigrant population number for India at 170,000, rising to 209,000 between 1980 and 1989 and to 573,000 between 1990 and 1999.
Good question. Surely not everyone who went through Ellis Island was a model citizen, but at least requiring them to go through a process would weed out a portion of the bad eggs.
I have no problem with their presence here if they are here legally, which most are. The problem lies in the fact that most are here to fill high tech jobs under H1B visas. Generally, they work for less than the usual wage of an American. Ostensibly, they fill jobs that for which there are no qualified Americans. Nothing could be further from the truth, but Congress turns a blind eye to the fact that greedy companies are using this, and "off-shoring" to give American jobs to cheap foreign labor here and abroad. This ships our technology overseas, as well as, valuable experience. Soon our youth will have only burger flipping jobs to aspire to. The H1B program continues to flourish because the greedy corporate sector wines and dines Congress, while the tech worker struggles.
Well stated, Friend
I think there should be a list of "high risk" countries (e.g. Saudi Arabia, for one) based on past immigration experiences in the US and other western countries based on assimilation rates/crime stats/social factors/welfare use/other qualities.
You could set up a computer program to evaluate risk. Immigrants from countries that have PROVEN to be good and productive citizens overall would have preference. Those from "high risk" countries would have to go through a much more intensive process, and would have much lower immigration rates overall.
There ws a thread on FR the other day about how the Feds have REMOVED Saudi Arabia and Pakistan from the list of high risk countries. They have also extended the Green Card lottery to Saudi nationals.
As a result of the changes in the student visa program, 10, 000 Saudi "students" are expected land here next year.
Oh, just freakin great.
How long are we going to keep up this charade that Saudi Arabia is our "friend"?
Are HI-B's counted as immigrants? I thought not.

Protect our borders and coastlines from all foreign invaders!

Sheana, my guess is that they were Paki.
ROFL
No, we have plenty, maybe we can make immigration of anyone contingent upon the egression (not positive I'm using that word correctly, it's the closest I could come to an antonym for immigration) of offensive people from here to somewhere else! :P
Oh, and I think I should get to decide who's offensive!
susie
...and before long the US will be as crowded as India. I say shut down the INS for a 5 year moratorium on ALL immigration from EVERYWHERE.
Just saw that reptile on your home page. You certainly have nerves of steel. Bumping against an alligator with a kayak? OMG! What were you thinking?!
Until we don't need their oil.
When I have to get a motel room in what used to be a best western type motel, that odor of cultural food as I entered a motel office turned me away. Unfortunately, now almost all of those types of motels are owned/run by Indians.

WTF??
That was my thought. BTW, usually, there are city or county laws of some sort against parking commercial vehicles on one's front lawn.
Everyone from India I work with or have met are well educated and gentlemanly in their manner. Their food is delicious, if you like spice. I've heard them call in sport talk shows complaining about this player or that player. They assimilate. As an added bonus - they have no use for Moslems.
I don't count people here on work/student/tourist visas as immigrants, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the article didn't when it said "around 1.4 million [immigrants] are Indians".
There are a lot of reporters out there who constantly refer to illegal aliens as immigrants, so who knows.
