I figured out what the AMT would hit me with the other week and it wasn't pretty.

What do you think of a lower, flatter income tax structure without all the deductions? That is what President Bush is trying to achieve.

???- It hits worse in the states and localities with high tax rates and higher incomes on which those rates are levied [Inhale deep and start singing "New York, New York"]. And New York, especially NYC, is a "blue" location.

As much as it pains me, I like the AMT for its potential to generate something of a taxpayer revolt.

And as much as it pains me, I like the AMT for the way it disproportionately impacts "blue" states whose representatives in Washington are the ones most strongly opposed to eliminating it.

Yeah, they are pretty blase about The Nation's business. And the current Pubbie Congress is spending money like there's no tomorrow.

(It makes me wish there were more Libertarian candidates availalable at election time.) The present batch of Republicans have shifted too far left for my liking.

Plus, of course, Republicans don't have that critical 100-seat majority, so they just can't do anything but spend a lot more every damn year, and waste nearly all of it.

The AMT was enacted in 1969 so we can pretty much figure who pushed it through back then.

But, BOTH parties are responsible for not getting rid of this crap. They are so involved with trying to screw the other party that they do not have time to take care of these types of important issues.
