I've got an idea. When we abolish the death penalty, we can deport our death row inmates to Europe.

I couldn't possibly care less about what the euros think! I care about us, not them.

Reading the article it seems that the only condemnations came from functionaries in various Socialist and Green parties, not governments.

I note that the Vatican simply reiterated its bolierplate statement on thed eath penalty, and did not buy into the "Tookie was a hero" or "Tookie was innocent" rhetoric.

Also, I find it unlikely that the local Graz city council will change the name of their local stadium from that of their favorite son to that of an American gangster.

Cardinal Renato Martino told AP Television News: "Even a criminal is worthy of respect because he is a human being."

Yeah...sure. Cardinal Martino, I am sure, has more pressing issues that need his attention. The Vatican's high and mighty should concentrate on removing the pedophiles from the Church (which, to be fair, has at least started in the right earnest under Pope Benedict).

"We know the death penalty doesn't resolve anything," Cardinal Renato Martino told AP Television News. "Even a criminal is worthy of respect because he is a human being. The death penalty is a negation of human dignity."

In other news, the people that tookie shot, in the back and back of the head 24 years ago, are still dead.

Where was the outrage from these idiots when he negated THEIR human dignity???

Well, Europe, what're ya gonna DO about it? Huh? Huh?

But as I recall, you had no outrage over Daniel Pearl or Nick Berg or anyone else who never killed anyone beheaded by Islamic terrorists, so this has nothing to do with outrage over "barbaric practices".

You're insanely jealous of America and the death penalty is just something for you to hang your hats on.

Doesn't the bible condone the death penalty?

If so, why is the church so morally sure of it's position?

"The death penalty is a negation of human dignity."

So is child molestation and covering it up, Cardinal. Pull the plank out of your own organization's eye before you criticize the dust in ours.

At the Vatican, Pope Benedict XVI's top official for justice matters denounced the death penalty for going against redemption and human dignity.

Unto Caesar those things which are Caesar's and unto God those thing which are God's.

Redemption is the realm of the spirit (God's), law and order is the realm of the state (Caesar's).

During the French Revolution they were lobbing off about 50 heads a day, no trial, women, children and old folks included.

"We know the death penalty doesn't resolve anything,"

Sorry, Cardinal. The death penalty guarantees a zero percent recidivism rate. The offender won't kill anyone ever again - either outside on the street, or inside the walls.
