VIENNA, Austria - California's execution of Stanley Tookie Williams on Tuesday outraged many in Europe who regard the practice as barbaric, and politicians in Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's native Austria called for his name to be removed from a sports stadium in his hometown.
At the Vatican, Pope Benedict XVI's top official for justice matters denounced the death penalty for going against redemption and human dignity.
"We know the death penalty doesn't resolve anything," Cardinal Renato Martino told AP Television News. "Even a criminal is worthy of respect because he is a human being. The death penalty is a negation of human dignity."

yet another proof that we did the right thing
I've got an idea. When we abolish the death penalty, we can deport our death row inmates to Europe.
I couldn't possibly care less about what the euros think! I care about us, not them.
I note that the Vatican simply reiterated its bolierplate statement on thed eath penalty, and did not buy into the "Tookie was a hero" or "Tookie was innocent" rhetoric.
Also, I find it unlikely that the local Graz city council will change the name of their local stadium from that of their favorite son to that of an American gangster.
Cardinal Renato Martino told AP Television News: "Even a criminal is worthy of respect because he is a human being."
Yeah...sure. Cardinal Martino, I am sure, has more pressing issues that need his attention. The Vatican's high and mighty should concentrate on removing the pedophiles from the Church (which, to be fair, has at least started in the right earnest under Pope Benedict).
Me too. The United States is the United States. What Europe thinks is no concern to me. They should clean their own houses first. Just another group jumping on the bandwagon.
Exactly!
The Pope should read the scriptures!!!!
"We know the death penalty doesn't resolve anything," Cardinal Renato Martino told AP Television News. "Even a criminal is worthy of respect because he is a human being. The death penalty is a negation of human dignity."
In other news, the people that tookie shot, in the back and back of the head 24 years ago, are still dead.
Where was the outrage from these idiots when he negated THEIR human dignity???
They need to grant citizenship to all of the Crips while they are at it.
Well, Europe, what're ya gonna DO about it? Huh? Huh?
But as I recall, you had no outrage over Daniel Pearl or Nick Berg or anyone else who never killed anyone beheaded by Islamic terrorists, so this has nothing to do with outrage over "barbaric practices".
You're insanely jealous of America and the death penalty is just something for you to hang your hats on.
Wanna bet? Ask Tookie...
If so, why is the church so morally sure of it's position?
I bet if Tookie and his crips buddies had been unleased on Cardinal Martino's family, he'd be singing another tune.
Our own little Mariel Boat Lift, eh? Not a bad idea...
So is child molestation and covering it up, Cardinal. Pull the plank out of your own organization's eye before you criticize the dust in ours.
Probably rename Woodward Avenue in Detroit Tookie Williams Ave before long...
Can't tell you how high my blood pressure gets when I here about Cezar Chavez Elementary here... bet it will be Hugo C. someday...
This enlightened opinion comes from Adolph Hitler's country of birth. How appropriate.
