Whirlpool to lay off 730 U.S. workers [Mexico Gains]
UPI ^ | 12/12/2005

BENTON HARBOR, Mich., Dec. 12 (UPI) -- Whirlpool Corp. said Monday it would dismiss about 730 workers at an Arkansas plant once a replacement factory in Mexico is operational.

The Michigan-based company recently built a refrigerator plant in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico, to produce side-by-side refrigerator-freezer models, beginning in 2006. The Mexican plant will employ 1,000 workers.

Once the Ramos Arizpe facility is operational, about 730 employees at Whirlpool's Fort Smith, Ark., plant will be part of a layoff, currently planned for October 2006. Some models now made in Fort Smith will be shifted to the new Mexican plant, Whirlpool said.

"Whirlpool currently anticipates that the vast majority of the layoffs will be voluntary and many of those employees would be recalled within 18 months, as part of the normal attrition rate at the Fort Smith facility," said a statement by the company, which is buying Iowa-based Maytag Corp.

"Because every American has a God-given right to receive an above-average wage?" (recognizing the sarcasm)

Why no, because every America has the right to use the power of the federal government to extort wealth from their fellow citizens through the imposition of onerous tariffs on cheap high-quality goods imported from overseas. (More sarcasm)

Or you can get into Healthcare.

One Million Nurse shortage in next ten years.

Not that hard of a degree to get. Govt. help is available. The Hospitals are DESPERATE right now.

Don't believe me, try it.

They make anywhere from 40/60hr and tons more in overtime.

If you are willing to work 6 days a week, and long shifts, I assure you, you can easily pull 100K-120K.

ONE MILLION SHORT in next 10 years.

Call *ANY* Hospital in your area and ask them if they have any openings for a nurse.

Wait till Boomers retire and need serious healtcare....

Invest in Healthcare stocks if you have money left over.

Oh I am sure when nurses take a break, they might enjoy a Burger, and some kid or some unskilled person would be happy to serve it to them.

That's just one field.

NANO-TECH is gearing up for next "BIG BOOM".

Leading edge of technology is here and going to remain here, so all NEW BIG THINGS like internet would be born here, and thus create tremendous amount of NEW wealth, opportunities and prosperity. You think Chinese or Mexicans are the ones that can either afford or have the necessary R&D to find cure for cancer?

After the BOOM other counties catch up, and benefit by making clever modifications to AMERICAN INVENTIONS while WE MOVE ON TO BIGGER AND BETTER THINGS!

I was referring to the 20,000 higher paying jobs per month. Where are those coming from?

The economy is generating 150,000-200,000 jobs per month. The expansion is broad based.

Which fact do you dispute? That more Americans are employed today than at any other time in history? Or that Americans are wealthier today than at any time in history?

"These Union workers you speak of contribute to their economies both locally and on a national level."

If businesses ran their affairs as labor unions must do in order to succeed under their present business model, the Department of Justice would be overwhelmed with antitrust work.

Their "contributions" are higher prices and lower productivity, along with the occasional bout of arson and assault against the EE-VIL "corporate money-grubbers."

Sometimes true, often false, same old mantra. Remember union workers in this country taught the rest of the world how to produce. We took second place to no one. There is a certain amount of corporate greed that has to be addressed here as well. In the end when these jobs go over-seas we all lose in the long run. I don't think you really want to be part of the cheering section. We are all floating on the same boat here.

That is up to debate. There are more Americans now than any other time. We once only needed 1 parent to work in the economy to survive. Now alot of families have 2 bread winners. A Conservative view would like to have only one parent working while the other takes care of the kids.

Also, what do you mean by wealth? DVD's? We also have more debt than any other time. It is a interesting debate on our current economy as opposed to the past.

The easiest way to do it is for Whirlpool to charge 5,000 dollars for a new microwave.

Whirlpool doesn't manufacture microwaves. They are manufactured for them by Sharp so while I have no doubt that Whirlpool will up their prices I don't think they'll go that far.

Also, what do you mean by wealth?

Inflation-adjusted GDP per capita.

We produce more per person (and therefore can consume more per person) than ever before in history.

If Whirlpool doesn't want WALMART to put them out of Business, they would HAVE to lower the cost.

In Korea they are almost there in trying to find lower cost solution and replace MS.

Europe tried but they fumbled.

However, it won't be long. MS would have to make the necessary adjustments.

Windmills of the Free Market Grind slow, but very fine.

As far as educational skill, its never too late. They don't have God given right to remain stupid.

That's all good. How are we gonna fix the national debt?

What do we do now to stop it from growing so much?

Is are economy based on myth by using debt to create wealth?

Nor is Whirlpool entitled to freely export jobs to Mexico so they can send crap back here sans an import tax...

You are against freedom and in favor of new taxes? What are you, a big-government liberal?

Have you seen WALMART employees? If it wasn't for WALMART, I would be surprised if any of them would be employed at all.

You need to take a macro economics class at a local community college.

But suffice it to say that in order for the government to borrow money, someone must lend it to the government. The amount that the government borrows and spends exactly equals the amount that someone has lent and foregone spending. It is impossible to "use debt to create wealth".

Cheap high quality goods produced with cheap and I mean disgustingly cheap labor. One step over slave labor!!! If you don't beleive it you are only fooling yourself. The third world is being used to the advantage of those like you who do not want to defend the American worker against dirt floor economic standards. Shame

Uh, no, actually Henry Ford taught workers that came here from around the world (mostly Europeans) how to produce and they later formed unions. Those workers worked hard (many still do), but they weren't the innovators.

Thanks for the class. I was just arguing that we are responsible in having to pay our debt. How are we gonna do it?

That makes no sense. American workers are the most productive in the world. They don't need defending from third world unproductive workers.

American workers are wealthier today than at any other time in history. We don't need to repeat the protectionist mistakes of Smoot-Hawley and change that fact.

That is a political, not economic, question.

That is a very wide brush you paint with!!! I know some Wally World employees. They make enough to take up the slack on the family income. Contrary to your concept some of them are intelligent and decent people. I am sure that they are dirt under your well heeled feet though. I wonder if you have ever worked in your life?
