"... And Jeffersonianism was unfortunately wiped from this nation of states after 1865."

I don't think I would have been very good as a fiddle-playing citizen farmer, so I'm happy that instead we have Federalism based upon Hamiltonian economic principles.

That's what made America what we are today. Jeffersonian principles would have made us into one big Guatemala.

This thread is reminding of threads waiting for a Bill Clinton speech.

What? Borrowing billions more, expanding the government, bringing back Gray Davis's key crew members to run things, and banning more guns wasn't bad enough for you? Geez!

Haaaa! I think he's using one of those rapid-fire nail guns - Bap! Bap! Bap! Bap!

I like Arnold and will go out on a limb for him here by putting myself in the "Arnie lets Tookie have the needle" column.

"I don't understand. He dies at your hand before he does physical harm. "

Again, I have no problem with killing in defense of self or others in an immediate situation. A knife at someone's throat is an immediate situation. I would shoot such a person at once. The act is not necessary for self defense, only the intention.

But, the situation must be immediate and plausible. Someone holding a gun to someone's head, a knife at their throat or actively attacking another person with intent to kill presents an immediate situation which justifies defensive action.

Preserving my own life and that of others is my only concern in an immediate situation. In all other situations, I may have other choices. An execution has nothing to do with immediacy. Therein likes my objection to the practice.

So let me get this straight. If someone breaks into your house and points a gun at your child, you are all for blowing them away. However, if the guy pulls the trigger before you do and kills your child. Then death for the perp is now out of the question?!?

I'm sorry, but if I were one of the victim's relatives, not only would I be in favor of this guy being put to death, I would be begging them to let me take HIS shotgun he used in the murders and turn his head into a soup-bowl!!

Gov. Barber of Georgia handled his announcement re a prisoner scheduled for execution in a very statesman-like and more dignified way IMO. He issued a written statement saying that he had reviewed all the transcripts of the trials and verdicts and did not feel that he should over-ride the decisions of the many courts.

Why is Arnold going on TV to make his own announcement instead of handling it the Barber way? This more visible announcement dramatizes Tookie's legal fate.

If anyone has pics of Tookies victims, this thread would be a good place to post them imo.

As a card carrying member of the religions right. I will let my believes guide my politicla opinions.

Fair enough -- I meant no offense. I'm a member of the 'religious right', too, but just because I think something is morally wrong (lying, profanity, etc.) doesn't mean I think the government ought to prohibit it.

If he was convicted of murder in Texas he would have been dead 10 years ago.

Threads like these were always the most fun. Years ago on FR I used to love incidents of national and global importance that would spur these threads. When in a lull, many of us would practically hope something would happen so we'd have something to talk about here.

I have to tell you that after the last few years I'm more inclined to hope that we DON'T have anything to discuss.

"If I am wrong and there is no God, and I am but a fool for following him, what have I lost?
"

Well, there you go. If that is your reason for belief, then it is not a true belief. I could ask you another question: There are many religions among human societies. Each has its own deity or deities. Each believes that their deity or deities are the true one.

You believe in a particular deity. What if you are wrong, and it is one of the other deities that is the true one? Your question to me is the same as my question to you.

I do not believe in any deities, so I believe in one fewer than you do, apparently. I cannot believe in supernatural entities. If I could, I probably would, like most folks do, but I cannot.

So, what if the Hindus are right, and there are dozens of deities, and you are the one who is wrong?

I don't think remorse should weigh in on the issue. Too easy to fake. To easy to show while your are under threat of death.

If they commit a murder, hang 'em.

Arnold's propositions did not pass this last election.
What did these Tookie lovers do? Now they want his help?

Maybe, just maybe Arnold's feeling a bit bad about that right now?
