Geysers erupt across county (Kingfisher, OK)
Newsok.com ^ | 12/12/2005

KINGFISHER -- State and local officials are puzzled by a series of geysers that have erupted in recent days in Kingfisher County, spewing mud and gas into the air.

The geysers have appeared throughout the countryside, with stretches of up to 12 miles between spots, and some as short as a quarter of a mile, Kingfisher Fire Chief John Crawford said.

The threat of the gas igniting is "unlikely," Crawford said, but a bigger concern is the gas could begin coming up through water-well lines.

The TV report said that there is an odor but it is not the odor we normally smell (because the stink is added). The guy said it was something like the oven smells (???). Like I said before, the reporting is problematic around here.

Don't tell me I moved out of earthquake country into tornado country just to have the earthquakes follow me. 'S not fair.

As long as the magma-spewing earthquake doesn't destroy Eischen's in Okarche, I'm okay...

I lived in Medicine Park, Oklahoma while growing up. Loved Meers burgers. And Sqaw Tit mountain was nearby (very un-PC). There was a creek near Meers where we used to swim.

Didn't know there was a fault there.

I was stationed at Ft. Sill and spent a good deal of time reading about and wandering in the Wichita Mountains Wild Life refuge during my time off. You can get info about the fault and its activity from the Oklahoma Geological Survey site.

Is anyone drilling in the area currently? (I hope, I hope!)

I looked for the well permit apps that used to be on the Daily Oklahoman site, but now I can't find them. Closest I found was an intent filed by Brown & Borelli in June 2005 and something dated October 18 2005 that was raw data I couldn't read.

When were you stationed there?

I lived there from age 9 till I turned 18. My Dad had a bait shop/souvenier (sp) store right outside the wildlife refuge. Remember Rex and Grandma's Old Plantation? Rex (now deceased) took me to my first circus, a Shriner Circus in Oklahoma City.

I grew up swimming/fishing in Elmer Thomas, Lawtonka and Quanna Parker lakes. Climbed straight up Mt. Scott many times. Actually rode my skateboard down Mount Scott -- talk about an experience.

I used to walk along the shoreline of Elmer Thomas Lake (about 13, 14 years old) and pretend I was in California and on the beach, with all the surfers wooing me, singing the Beach Boy's song "Surfer Girl." Boy, I had an imagination :)

Many of the lifelong residents living in Medicine Park I grew up with, still have many friends there. I visited one friend last June in Medicine Park, and went to all my old hangouts in the refuge.

I'll check out the geological site, thanks.

I left Medicine Park in 1973, moved to another state.

When I tell people I grew up in Oklahoma they automatically think of the plains. I tell them to just envision taking a pair of scissors, cut out a piece of Colorado, and set it right in the middle of the plains. That's the Wichita Mountains.

Growing up in Medicine Park, my playground was the wildlife refuge. We spent our summers hiking/swimming/fishing and picnicing in the refuge.

It should either smell sweet or like rotten eggs if it is unprocessed natural gas. It is possible that it would be almost all really light ends and have no odor to speak of, except that which it picked up travelling in the sediments under the creek.

This could be either a natural seep or be leaking from either a feeder pipeline coming from a well or a well itself if the casing is bad.

If it does have the characteristic swamp cabbage stink, it is processed gas and from a distribution line.

well, I had forgotten, but about 2 years ago, they officially changed the name of Dead Indian Creek to Winter Camp Creek. Of course, all the locals here still call it "Dead Indian Creek" but officially it is now Winter Camp Creek. So, the PC bug has hit here somewhat. However, while driving through town today, I noticed the Christmas decorations outside of the courthouse. One of them was a large display that had the letters J O Y. In the middle of the "O" was a carving depicting the nativity scene. This sits on the major N/S highway west of I-35. US HWY 81 runs right by the courthouse. So, we haven't gone completely PC.
