Sen. Bob Bennett has a new ally in his fight to make it a crime to deface the U.S. flag: Sen. Hillary Clinton.
The New York Democrat and former First Lady has signed on as a co-sponsor of the Republican Bennett's bill. And she's taking some heat for the alliance, the Salt Lake Tribune's Washington bureau reported.
Bennett's bill would allow the government to fine or imprison someone who intentionally defaces or destroys the flag.
Clinton spokesman Philippe Reines says Clinton's backing comes after talking with veterans who want the flag protected.
"Burning or destroying an American flag is a despicable act that disrespects the sacrifices of our brave veterans and soldiers who fought to protect the very freedom of speech that flag burners exploit," Clinton said in a June statement. "I find this abhorrent and will endeavor to make sure our laws reflect this."
The American Legion this week blasted Clinton for sponsoring Bennett's bill instead of backing a constitutional amendment proposed by U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah. Hatch, who has secured 57 Senate sponsors to his resolution, says amending the constitution would prohibit U.S. judges from striking down any law that protects the flag.
"In deference to the senator, she may be sincere in her quest for a law, but she is sincerely wrong," said American Legion National Commander Thomas Bock. "The remedy she has chosen, a statute without an enabling amendment to the U.S. Constitution, is a long road to a dead-end."
Neither Bennett nor Hatch, however, has been able to get any momentum behind their proposals. Hatch's bill has been stuck in committee since April and Bennett's bill hasn't moved since October when he introduced it for the second time.
Next she'll be hawking parental rights.

I agree, she is trying to paint herself as a middle of the roader, but she is actually falling off the left side...
If anyone is fooled by this political posturing they need to get their heads examined.
This must be killing her to pretend she is a conservative.
Who cares? Hillary is nothing more than an opportunist. The flag means nothing to her except for how she can exploit it to her political gain.
When she no longer has a 100% rating from NARAL and it's down to 0% as it is for almost all Republicans (FYI, Olympia Snowe gets 100% from NARAL), then MAYBE I'll listen to her. Until then, STFU, Hillary. You're not fooling anyone on the right.

Such an obvious ploy to throw a bone towards the middle by picking an emotional hot button non-issue like this one. This issue is like 10 million down the list an off the radar screen of most Americans of pressing issues. But her she is trying to wrap herself in the flag.
Social Security, Medicare and the new Prescription medication plan MUST be converted to private sector plans. Any government that pulls the purse strings on programs that impact this large a segment of it's people, will hold too much influence over those people.
Getting her ducks in a row for those questioning her patriotism.
I would hope the Bush Administration DoJ has been ordered to have been assembling a dossier on her wretched past implicating her in innumerable stunts, lies, and conspiracies in preparation for Election 2008, but I fear a "deal" is already a fait accompli.
I think that she is afraid someone will use it to choke her.

You can't see the middle of the road from where she stands.
Reading the story, it appears that her real motive is to offer a competing bill to the Amendment offered by Hatch, in an effort to defeat that proposal.
My point was that NewsMax makes its living on her name. Just search their site and find out how many references there are to her. Probably as many as the NYT and NYPost combined.
She is gonna have alot of explaining to do to the left in 2 years. That be saying, she has plenty of time to go back to her comrades on the left.
