WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Survivors from New Orleans told a congressional panel on Tuesday they felt abandoned by government at all levels after Hurricane Katrina hit the city and had been subjected to racial slurs and menaced by guns when they sought food and water.

"We were abandoned. City officials did nothing to protect us," Patricia Thompson, a New Orleans evacuee now living in Texas, told a House of Representatives panel investigating the response to the storm.

"We saw buses, helicopters and FEMA trucks but no one stopped to help us. We never felt so cut off in all our lives," Thompson said.

She described "demoralizing and inhumane" treatment by police telling the panel: "We were cursed when we asked for help for our elderly. We had guns aimed at us by the police who were suppose to be there to protect us."

And just what did you do to prepare yourself, Ms Thompson??

These people are dumber than dirt. The answer is simple, just contact your New Orleans Mayor, currently living in Texas at: 1-800-RAY-NAGIN. If there is no answer, there is the 1-800-000-BLANCO.

Probably. I'll look it up tomorrow at work. Until then, please refer to my previous post as to the appropriate LA contact numbers. LOL

I wonder if Congress will interview any of us taxpayers to ask if we feel inclined to rebuild New Orleans or would rather finish the job of "blowing the levees" and let the water rise to it's natural level....

Much of New Orleans is NOT worth the cost of rebuilding...
There ARE Gulf communities that were damaged more, and far more deserving of Federal assistance than the leaches and bitchers in New Orleans..

It always irritates me when those who contribute least to society demand the most from its citizens...

The military took them to an evacuation point on a highway where they spent the night, awakening to a "bunch of hard red necks scowling and growling at us in military uniforms ... pointing guns at us and treating us worse than prisoners of war," she said.

This story is up there with the mass graves

Gee .. why didn't the print that in this article?

----I read this article and the only impression I got was what poor "liars" they were. These are the ones that are ruining it for the good people in Louisiana. These are the ones that are jumping on the bandwagon of this discrimination BS. And yes, it is BS. They were told to evacuate and if they didn't have a car ( although you see tons of them in flood waters and they belonged to someone) what? No friends either? Listening to you want, it's no wonder you have no friends. These people are uneducated and are just playing the race card as they have always been taught. I read the article , laughed, and am posting now. That will be all I will think of it. Just another useless article about some trash that was too damned stupid to find a way to get out. Next time they wanna play follow the leader, don't follow the Jesse Jacksons and Louis Farrakhans of the world. Follow the rats at the very least in the city. Even they were smart enough to go to higher ground.

Of the five African Americans who testified, only Terrol Williams, a former federal worker, said he did not think the botched response was rooted in racial attitudes.

This guy was the only lucid and sane person on the panel.

Leah Hodges, a community activist, recalled... a "bunch of hard red necks scowling and growling at us in military uniforms ...

"Red neck" is a racist term.

Hodges described waiting in the burning sun in conditions she likened to a concentration camp. Rep. Jeff Miller, a Florida Republican, asked her to stop making that comparison.

"I'm going to call it what it is. If I put a dress on a pig, a pig is still a pig," she responded heatedly.

Miller countered, "Not a single person was marched into a gas chamber and killed."

Yeah, I saw it too. A little over the top and the acting was so bad it was silly. The Defeatocrats prepared the script, they obviously needed a better cast to read it.

Are some of these people from ANSWER? I saw a bunch of NO folks marching in DC with them from NO and I'm still getting rally info from ANSWER concerning NO.

They are determined to tie the hurricane in with the antiwar/anti-military movement.
