Sen. Charles Schumer is predicting failure for Iraq's democratically-elected government, complaining that the vote next week to determine the country's new parliament is being "imposed" on the Iraqi people by the U.S.
"There will be no government in Iraq the way they're trying to structure it now," the New York Democrat told WABC-TV's "Behind the News" on Sunday. "They're going to have these elections but that's sort of being imposed on them."
Schumer questioned the legitimacy of the Iraqi vote despite sky-high turnouts for the country's January and October elections, which saw a higher percentage of voter participation than in U.S. elections.

I think Schumer is making a boo boo. If I remember right, the UN arranged the election schedule.

This is sickening. People risk their lives to vote for self determination and a US Senator questions legitimacy.

Yes, he'd advocate bringing back the torture chamber which was testified to today -- in Saddam's trial.
Yes, Chucky has great timing.
Free elections bad. Revert back to torture and killing.
That would make Chucky happy.
Talk about stuck on stupid!

"Schumer has apparently decided that the key to immortality is to oppose, denigrate and criticize everything the President does."
Speaking of which, whatever became of Henry Waxman? During much of Bush's first term, Waxman was the guy who was always there to demand an investigation of this or that, to oppose Bush for putting his pants on in the morning. He's been kind of quiet lately - did he pass the assbite baton to Schumer?

Jes*s, no offense intended for NYer's but why didn't the likes of Rangel, Schumer and Hildebeest get snuffed out on 9/11. God, there are some ignorant types out there, to keep electing those fools.

I'm in upstate NY in a suburb of Rochester. The city itself is a Dem welfare city. In our Town, it was almost a clean sweep by the Republicans. The massive "closed minded" population of NYC is the problem just like the city of Rochester.

Schumer has been promised a piece of the rock by Hillary. He just hasn't figured out that he'll be "under it".

What did Chuckie take a break from committing identity of republican senatorial candidates, or did he stop reading Judge Alito's writing from the 80's to poke his head up to bad mouth us again?
Heh! maybe the Iraqi's want Saddam restored to power so order can be restored?

Another one who hopes for the U.S. to lose in Iraq and also is glad to hear of military deaths.
Schumer is the designated Dem hitman in the Senate. He knows this is as far as he gets, politically, so he figures he has nothing to lose by being outrageous. And, his constituents don't care, they're on board.
Will any "serious" journalist question Schumer on his condescension? Schumer, by his words, is saying that Iraqis can't think for themselves...kinda racist if you ask me.

Schumer is a jack-ass.....(which is somehow fitting since the symbol of his political party is a jack-ass).

Let's "impose" equal rights for women while we're at it.
Would Chuckie object?

I wish the leadership country -- both parties, that is -- would give up this silly, childesh notion that "spreading freedom and democracy around the world" is somehow a moral/political mandate of the United States. In some cases, "freedom and democracy" is the last thing this country really wants -- and I've made the case that Iraq is a perfect example of such.
The development of a viable nation-state in Iraq is absolutely impossible, and anyone who thinks it would work out in the end is naive, delusional, or both.

"I swear, this is the worst politcal strategy ever."
Only if the Republicans make an issue of it. If they point out the RATs are traitors, they will benefit much more than if they are silent. Most people are used to the RAT blathering and don't see it for what it really is.

This was inevitable. The rats are panicked. Suddenly, Iraq is looking like it's going to turn into a big win for W as it moves to self-government and as the countryside is pacified and the Iraqi troops and police become increasingly competant.
So the next ploy will be twofold: Question the legitimacy of the Iraqi government and complain about the brutality of the tactics of Iraqi troops and police.

In modern wartime, words are weapons. Senator Schumer's words are treason. How long will we and this government permit such aid and comfort to the enemy?
