Unfortunately, they all carry video games labeled Mature, often geared to pre-teens and young teens,"

Give the game makers a break: games with a "Mature" rating aren't made for pre or young teens, that's why it's called "Mature." If there's a problem there, it's the game ratings boards' faults. Increasingly, video games are becoming an entertainment media for adults, not children.

I don't disagree about the dolls, though. They are dressed like hookers.

Yep, I want Grand Theft Auto available for me but it's not appropriate for kids.

Some of the dolls, though, I don't know who they would be appropriate for.

The Bratz dolls are getting much more shelf space this year than Barbies. By comparison, Barbie seems sweet and non-sexual!

Parents hope that these ratings don’t matter,

If you are a parent and you are so stupid as buy "Rated Mature" stuff for little Johnny whether it is games, music, books or movies, then these items are the least of little Johnny's problems.

I don't disagree that this stuff is unsuitable for children, but DON'T BUY IT! There are actually other things out there that are suitable, and I tend to not buy my kids that many toys, anyway, because they don't need them.

Not just toys, but clothing. You can more easily dress your toddler girl as a streetwalker than you can dress her as a little girl. The clothing thing drives me bannas. I end up buying at certain very expensive stores just because they have "real" little girl clothes. I've purchased a sewing machine also. I can sew things that are age appropriate and modest, even though its not really cost effective. Who would have thought it would cost more money to dress a 4-year-old like a 4-year-old???

Gosh. A guy could go to the store and look for other toys, I'd guess. I did that the other day, and there were plenty of good wholesome toys. I bought some of them for my great nieces and nephews for Christmas.

Indeed, there are adult video games. THEY'RE FOR ADULTS. Don't buy them for children. Sheesh!

they don’t think its appropriate for a family shopping mall.

What on earth is a "family shopping mall"?

It sickens me to see what society is doing to children.

My 7 year old thinks Bratz are gross. She is currently playing a 3rd grade adventure game on the computer with Nnimal Planet on the TV. I can see both the TV and the computer from where I am sitting - and both are in her room.

Marketting to children as if they were short adults is offensive to me....and so I monitor what she watches and plays and reads........It is not society's resonsibility to do that - it is mine as a parent.

What sickens me even more is the parents that don't notice or care, or who have adopted an "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" kind of attitude.

Do we really want our 4-year old princesses dressing dolls that look like street-walkers? Do we want our teenage daughters to dress that way?

Judging from the many pre-teens (even young children) dressing themselves this way with parents in tow, I'd have to say yes.

NOTE TO PARENTS: Look at the ratings of the video games before you buy them. Grand Theft Auto is rated M (for Mature) which means no kids. And don't count on the local video store to check the ratings of video games as they do with movies.

Good article! I have a horse that I stable at a barn where they give lessons to kids. The owner/teacher is a Christian and is my friend. One day I walked in to take my horse out and there was a little girl, about 8, waiting for her lesson and wearing a spaghetti-strap tank that had the word "Slut" written across it in glitter. My friend gave her a shirt to throw on over it, but was careful not to embarrass the little girl.

The parents were furious that their 8 yr old girl could not wear the "Slut" t-shirt.

I think we have a problem here, and it isn't with the children.

Any video or book I get for my nieces and nephews I vet. And I am very careful about the toys I buy for them. BTW, you can't go wrong with plastic animals.

Legos: the best toys ever after video games. The best thing about them is that you can't scew up with giving them; at worst, any set you give him is just more parts to build something else. And more is always better.

-----There are PLENTY of toys out there for little kids. If your kid is too young for a certain toy, DO NOT buy it. I know I will get flamed here but as far as The Sims game goes, I have them all. I do not play it but I design furniture and homes for players to download into the game at my website.

http://lamb41163.tripod.com/

It is all innocent. You make the game what you want.
I would never let my 5 year old play with it but it is a parents job to supervise what is bought for them and what is inappropriate.
