If I understand this correctly, they herd the critters into a cove to make it easier to kill for consumption.

Sounds Ok to me.

I really don't care about dolphins and whales to be honest.

What to dolphins taste like?

I remember one comedian saying "Am I the only one who thinks tuna tasted better when there was still dolphin in it?"

"However," he commented, "if they are so proud of this, why do they take such pains to hide their activity?"

I'll take a stab at an answer Mr. O'Barry.

With terrorist groups like PETA, ALF and their ilk ready at a moments notice to destroy, kill and maim anyone to forward their agenda. Maybe they don't want to have to deal with the lies, demonstrations and terrorist attacks broadcasting images of the fishing would provoke?

I don't drag a film crew into the pig lot when we butcher a mess of hogs. I suspect these people are doing the same for the same reason. Any fool who doesn't understand where meat comes from might get a wee bit upset to see the actual butchering process.

Oh, and the gratuitous "heavy metals" fear mongering crap was just a bit over the top. You PETAphile types will stop at nothing to sell your bulls*it.

Thing is, we ain't buying it anymore.

I'm not in favor of killing dolphins or whales, but I hunt deer, so it would be hypocritical of me to criticize the Japanese for hunting the way they want to.

Zannen desu ga, shikata ga nai... It's regrettable, but not much you can do about it...

Japan * ping * (kono risuto ni hairitai ka detai wo shirasete kudasai : let me know if you want on or off this list)

What a disgusting bunch of hateful, unctuous idiots have taken over this site! Did you know that dolphins have bigger brains than you? That they love sex more than humans, are the most playful, curious and trainable animal in the sea? Nevermind their service in our Navy, they have saved countless drowning people and inspired mankind with their beauty.

Dr. Francis Crick (co-discoverer of DNA) found dolphins, and possibly whales, to be the only known animals that did not dream during sleep, (even birds do it) and speculated they may have such high intelligence that they never forget ANYTHING in their lives.

I am sick and tired of every single thing posted on this forum being twisted into some sanctimonious circle-jerk comment on abortion, to the exclusion of recognizing human cruelty.

Japan, still living partly in the 16th century. These fools would strip the earth bare if we let them.

"Noting that there are no scientific studies showing dolphins are responsible for falling fish stocks in the area, O'Barry cited overfishing as the probable cause."

There's no scientific study showing it's overfishing either if you read his quote carefully.

However, it is the inhumane way in which the mammals are killed, by stabbing and spearing them, that especially provokes such widespread revulsion.

I stopped reading right here.

'widespread revulsion'?

Where are the stats to back that up?

I'll qualify this post by noting I'm not familiar with this particular species of dolphin. But there are a couple of major differences between most dolphins and animals that we hunt, especially grass eaters like deer. For starters, dolphin are one hell of a lot more intelligent than deer, and most other animals too. For another, they have a really strong affinity for humans. The many stories about them saving folk who have fallen overboard, pushing them to a beach, etc. are true. For whatever reason, dolphin seem to just naturally like us humans. I can personally attest to the fact that if you are in a boat and get even remotely near a pod of dolphin, they will generally come right over to your location, within inches, jump and play around the boat, look you in the eye, and just generally say hello. Everyone I've ever met (and I'm sure most that I haven't met) that goes to sea loves dolphin and would find the idea of killing one repugnant.

The fact that "liberals" self righteously pretend to be lovers of creatures they probably never see in the wild nauseates me. But so does the wholesale slaughter of these beautiful creatures. Anyone who takes pleasure in it or finds it funny ought to ask themseves if they'd also take pleasure in or laugh at the slaughter of the other animal that love humans, the dog.

I find it highly ironic that the head dolphin captivity slave master, Ric O'Barry (or in Japanese..LicObelly), who held back food from Flipper until he cackled at his beck and call, would become so incensed by this mercy killing.

I also wonder how many Senators voted on Resolution 99 thinking they were prohibiting Crawdads from being boiled to death. ergo "Resolution 99...Expressing the sense of the Senate to condemn the inhumane and unnecessary slaughter of small cetaceans"

There was a woman in my favorite deli the other day with a PETA shirt and the usual gross eyebrow piercings, ordering some fart-inducing vegetarian crap. I asked the sandwich man for "tuna-free dolphin". He said I must have meant the other way around. I insisted I wanted dolphin and didn't like tuna to spoil the flavor. My fake order had its intended effect. The human-hating dyke unleashed on me about how "insensitive" I was, how dolphins are "as smart as people" and how cruel it is to kill and eat any animals. On that last overreaching point of hers she drew other meat-lovers into the mix, to her great embarrassment. I despise those people and enjoy making fools of them in public any chance I get.

If the dolphins are so brilliant, why haven't they figured out to stay out of that area after so many generations?

This is for all you dolphinophiliacs;

Flipper
They call him Flipper, Flipper, faster than lightning,
No-one you see, is smarter than he,
And we know Flipper, lives in a world full of wonder,
Flying there-under, under the sea!
Everyone loves the king of the sea,
Ever so kind and gentle is he,
Tricks he will do when children appear,
And how they laugh when he's near!
They call him Flipper, Flipper, faster than lightning,
No-one you see, is smarter than he,
And we know Flipper, lives in a world full of wonder,
Flying there-under, under the sea!
