Joe Lieberman: Saddam Had WMD Programs

Following up on his Wall Street Journal article Tuesday defending the Iraq war, Sen. Joseph Lieberman is reminding Bush administration critics that it's wrong to claim that Saddam Hussein had no weapons of mass destruction when the U.S. attacked in 2003.

"The so-called Duelfer Report, which a lot of people read to say there were no weapons of mass destruction - concluded that Saddam continued to have very low level of chemical and biological programs," Lieberman told ABC Radio host Sean Hannity on Wednesday.

"[Saddam] was trying to break out of the U.N. sanctions by going back into rapid redevelopment of chemical and biological and probably nuclear [weapons]," Lieberman said, calling the Iraqi dictator "a ticking time bomb."

"I have no regrets" that the U.S. toppled Saddam, the former vice presidential candidate explained. "I think we can finish are job there, and as part of it - really transform the Arab-Islamic world."

Lieberman said that his fellow Democrats haven't taken kindly to his decision to buck his party on Iraq.

"There's been some grumbling," he told Hannity. "In Connecticut there's a 'Dump Joe' web site that has cropped up."

But Lieberman added, "I've been here long enough where, at this stage in my career, I'm going to do what I think is right."

Saddam had 500 tons of yellowcake. He wasn't planning on being in a bake-off...

Maybe he will publicly renounce the 'Rats like Zell Miller did.

He won't. But if he ran for president he'd probably win. That assumes, of course, that the D's can actually nominate a rational candidate.

Lieberman moves towards the center to distinguish himself from other Dems, and just in time to test the waters fo 2008.

"IIRC, Lieberman is pretty well of financially anyway from family money. I do not see his statements here being at all inconsistent with anything else he has ever said about foreign policy."

Show me a Senator that isn't financially well off.

That's true. But if the party leadership pulled their collective heads out and decided to the right thing, instead of the political thing, the young politicians could vote their consciences.

Joe is a Socialist, but he is an American Socialist.

I have a feeling he has chosen sides in the war with the CIA.

It's not that Lieberman is really a Republican, because he's not. What's admirable about his stance here is that he's not letting party affiliation determine his stance on a particular issue on which he supports the Presidents. He's generally an honest and principled guy, even if we don't agree with all his principles. So he's at least an adversary you can respect.

Lieberman is a Democrat and never forget it. My better half is from Mystic Ct. and they for most part live Conservative but vote Democrat. All of family vote Democrat and will till they die. We do not talk politics because they know we vote Republican and vote like we live.I've always said they would vote for Hitler if he ran as Democrat. So now that Lieberman is at end of his time in Senate he is being honest and doing what is right for USA ?????? Sorry it's to late for me. He and Al Gore would have done and did anything they could to get elected and never forget it.

"Hopefully, this "disease" will spread among the minority party"

It's not party specific. It's American politics.

But Lieberman added, "I've been here long enough where, at this stage in my career, I'm going to do what I think is right."

As opposed to early in his career?

Kinda scary about what this sentence DOESN'T say
How long does a career have to be before doing what you think is right?

Didn't Richard Miniter in his book "Disinformation" document that there were in fact WMD's found in Iraq.
And as memory serves there have been a couple of news articles posted on FR documenting the WMD's found in Iraq.

Why is everyone still denying it??

Fiscally and socially Joe is no conservative.

However, writing these editorials and taking the slings and arrows takes a certain amount of character and guts.

I'm very grateful to him.

Interestingly, he is more of a Republican than the "Republican" he replaced, though.
