Following up on his Wall Street Journal article Tuesday defending the Iraq war, Sen. Joseph Lieberman is reminding Bush administration critics that it's wrong to claim that Saddam Hussein had no weapons of mass destruction when the U.S. attacked in 2003.
"The so-called Duelfer Report, which a lot of people read to say there were no weapons of mass destruction - concluded that Saddam continued to have very low level of chemical and biological programs," Lieberman told ABC Radio host Sean Hannity on Wednesday.
"[Saddam] was trying to break out of the U.N. sanctions by going back into rapid redevelopment of chemical and biological and probably nuclear [weapons]," Lieberman said, calling the Iraqi dictator "a ticking time bomb."
"I have no regrets" that the U.S. toppled Saddam, the former vice presidential candidate explained. "I think we can finish are job there, and as part of it - really transform the Arab-Islamic world."
Lieberman said that his fellow Democrats haven't taken kindly to his decision to buck his party on Iraq.
"There's been some grumbling," he told Hannity. "In Connecticut there's a 'Dump Joe' web site that has cropped up."
But Lieberman added, "I've been here long enough where, at this stage in my career, I'm going to do what I think is right."
Maybe he will publicly renounce the 'Rats like Zell Miller did.
Come over to the good side Joe! Defect!
I wouldn't hold my breath.
Boy, looks like Lieberman is going to be even less popular with the Democratic base.
OOOPSY...MOVEON.ORG has already announced they will find another democrat to run against Lieberman next time...this time, they might do something drastic...
like have Nancy Pelosi give him a stern talking to!! LOL
Go Joe!
I've said it before: Lieberman is the Democrat I dislike the least.
"Say it ain't so Joe!" Dems disappointed in one time VP nominee.
They cannot stand someone being American - I noticed the sun rose in the east again today too.
Before we get too excited about this guy, we should remember that Lieberman's position on Iraq might be smart, but he's no Zell Miller. Lieberman has consistently received ratings of "F" from the NRA because of his opposition to gun rights. Miller is pro-American, pro-gun, and a genuine patriot.
If Miller ran for president, I would likely vote for him. I could never vote for Lieberman for president. Maybe Secretary of Defense.
McCain for Lieberman - an even trade.
"But Lieberman added, "I've been here long enough where, at this stage in my career, I'm going to do what I think is right." "
And there you have it. That is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, problems in American politics today. A young politician has to play the game. Bow to special interests, regurgitate the party line. If you want to survive, there's no room for doing what's right.
Now Joe can do what he thinks is right, because if he gets shelved, he's financially set.
Very discouraging.
"I've been here long enough where, at this stage in my career, I'm going to do what I think is right."
What a concept - a Democratic politician doing what he thinks is right, instead of what he thinks is politically expedient......
Hopefully, this "disease" will spread among the minority party, and we'll begin to pull together as a team in this war on terror. I don't hold out any hope for ALL of them ([cough]...Pelosi..Reid....[cough, cough]), but if they begin to see the good in it, it might catch on!
Zell Miller is a Democrat, because when he entered politics in the south, that was the only choice if you had a shot at being elected.
I just did. Thanks for the link!
IIRC, Lieberman is pretty well of financially anyway from family money. I do not see his statements here being at all inconsistent with anything else he has ever said about foreign policy.
