Before we get too excited about this guy, we should remember that Lieberman's position on Iraq might be smart, but he's no Zell Miller. Lieberman has consistently received ratings of "F" from the NRA because of his opposition to gun rights. Miller is pro-American, pro-gun, and a genuine patriot.
If Miller ran for president, I would likely vote for him. I could never vote for Lieberman for president. Maybe Secretary of Defense.
Zell Miller is a Democrat, because when he entered politics in the south, that was the only choice if you had a shot at being elected.
It's not that Lieberman is really a Republican, because he's not. What's admirable about his stance here is that he's not letting party affiliation determine his stance on a particular issue on which he supports the Presidents. He's generally an honest and principled guy, even if we don't agree with all his principles. So he's at least an adversary you can respect.

Ditto's, he is not a conservative. More of a Kennedy democrat "lite".
You are right that many conservatives, like me, would not vote for Lieberman against the average conservative. But I don't mind disagreeing and arguing with someone amicably on a host of issues as long as we both agree that national defense comes before all other issues. Lieberman understands this. The great majority of Dems do not. That is one reason why I left the party, and have great respect for the few Dems who understand the import of the war on terror. For that reason I would vote for Lieberman before I would vote for someone like Pat Buchanan who does not understand what we are up against. National defense trumps everything else.
