Letters | Gun ownership not at heart of being American
Re: the Nov. 29 Inquirer articles "About 500 mourn devoted young father," "Phila. man, 23, found fatally shot in Nicetown," and "Packing heat - and political punch."
Guns are making a combat zone of our streets. Shootings wreak havoc from the inner city to the rural communities of Pennsylvania. As a medic with the Marines in Vietnam, I tried to save the victims of guns and other weapons.
In "Packing heat - and political punch," I am appalled by Tammy Bruce's comment, "Owning a gun is at the heart of what it means to be an American." Many of us who have experienced the results of gun violence do not equate owning a gun with being an American.
As a veteran, I want to see the dying stop.
To stem this appalling violence, it is important that we have legislation, not influenced by the gun lobby, that addresses the plague of handguns in our streets. As a start, it is imperative that in Pennsylvania handgun purchases be limited to one per month.
The death and injury caused by guns are unacceptable and unnecessary. We must do all we can to stop the carnage.
Mike Felker
Philadelphia
Tammy Bruce is more of a man than you are, Mr. Felker.
Seriously.
I agree with Tammy here. The drug dealers aren't going to give up their guns, nor learn fire discipline, no matter how many laws are passed.
An "author never read the Constitution" BTTT
Sarcasm Off.
Thank you for your service, sailor.
Oh yeah, Mr. Felkner, that'll slow down the murder rate! We all know, after all, that if there were just more laws to keep people from legally obtaining weapons, it would have a profound impact on the criminals, who, by definition, don't worry much about the law anyway.
Yet another do-gooder with an idea that wasn't thought through at all. But hey, I'm sure it feels good to take stand, doesn't it, sir? And isn't that what it's all about? Who cares if it's effective or not, so long as it feels right?
Hey, Felker, I'll make a deal with you. If you agree to suspend the 1st, I'll agree to suspend the 2nd. What? No deal? You enjoy the ability to express your opinion in the press? Well, that right is only enforcable because of the 2nd.
Go whine in France.
Fine, Mr. Felker then don't ever defend yourself again. That way, if you're killed as a result, then your "want" will be ulimately satisfied: you'll be 6 feet under and you won't see any more dying.
Smells like a liar to me. A Marine referring to a weapon as a 'gun'?
Repeat after me: "THIS is my rifle! THIS is my gun! THIS is for fighting! THIS is for fun!"
Well, since Marines have Corpsmen and NOT "medics", you might want to reconsider thanking this guy. I think he's a bull$h!!ter.
FELKER IS A LIAR'S LIAR, HE IS NOT A VETERAN.
MEDICS didn't serve with Marines.
NAVY FREAKIN CORPSMAN DID.
And every real veteran knows the difference.
LIAR!!!!@
"A Marine referring to a weapon as a 'gun'? "
***
Well, corpsmen are sailors so perhaps his ignorance is excusable since he didn't go to Marine boot camp where "This is my rifle, this is my gun!" is de rigeur.
"As a start, it is imperative that in Pennsylvania handgun purchases be limited to one per month."
Yeah...That'll do the trick. (sarcasm)
Watta idiot. And you notice he said "as a start"?
Sounds like he's for incremental gun banning.
Someone should make a film showing precisely what would happen if guns were banned in this country.Maybe those with this mindset would watch and learn. They certainly don't know anything about history or they wouldn't push for something as disastrous as an all-out gun ban.
Or,then again, maybe they would,if they were for a nanny state.
Who said it was?
It may be part but not the heart.
The heart is Freedom.
But freedom must be defended.
"...to the rural communities of Pennsylvania."
D@mn those rootin' tootin' gun shootin' Amish! ;)
Hey, don't berrate sailors.
No sailor would EVER say MEDIC.
All sailors know the difference.
Now go ask a Marine if he thinks that sailor corpsman is a knownothing.
I dare ya.
Maybe not owning a gun per se - but (self defense aside) being able to effectively resist a tyrannical government IS at the heart of being an American.
And until something more effective than "guns" comes along, they will have to do.
"Guns are making a combat zone of our streets."
Its not the guns, it's the criminal minorities spawned by DemocRAT social policies. Actually the crime rate correlates much better with the availability of minorities than gun availability. Perhaps we should ban them!
