In my sophomore year at Pomona College my intramural inner tube water polo team made it to the championship game. The co-ed activity required each 7 person squad to have two women in the water at all times. Women's goals counted as two points as well - nice shooting Emily Gold, class of 2003!
Some called this setup sexist, but it achieved its aim - women were included both on the squad and during the games. (The unintended consequence - a team fielded by the Women's Water Polo Team proved very difficult to beat.)
But all that may change now, I discovered this evening as I read notes from the school's student senate meeting:
Sports Commissioner Alex Wakeman 06 asked the Senate for advice about an inner-tube water polo scoring system concern. Currently, female participants are awarded two points per goal and male participants are awarded one point per goal. One student was concerned about where transgendered students fit in this system. Wakeman understands the concern, but she is reluctant to change the scoring system because she feels it encourages more women to participate. DesRochers pointed out that the Senate needs to learn more about transgender issues because they do not have the vocabulary and background to provide the best solutions for these problems.Suddenly I feel old enough to remark that my college years passed during a simpler time. We didn't have I-Pods, camera cell phones or even accomodations for transgender students.
So what happens at a liberal arts college when a policy that benefits one favored identity group (women) is suddenly deemed politically incorrect by another favored identity group (transgender students)?
If the answer is one and a half points I have a feeling that a lot of men on campus will suddenly "identify as" transgender.
Lest readers imagine that the whole college is crazy alumnus Adam Cahn offers these sensible words:
Let me state for the record that, in four years at the colleges (not to mention a couple trips back since then), I never met a so-called transgendered person. I do, however, remember spending a modest fortune on tuition. Any notion that scarce tuition dollars should subsidize this nonexistent lifestyle while Pomona College struggles to house its students is financially irresponsible and deeply insulting to the silent majority of Pomona students.
Your editorial was a direct reflection of the unquestioning, leftist groupthink that permeates life at The Claremont Colleges. I strongly recommend the editors temporarily exit the Claremont Bubble to spend some time in the real world.
how's 1-1/2 sound?
I mean, this *has* *got* *to* *be* the most assinine thing I have *EVER* heard. This is for real ? People actually have these kinds of policies and conversations !?
Please tell me that my alma mater, Claremont McKenna College, contiues to be an island of sanity in this mad, mad sea.
Whoever wins we lose.
I can't believe this is even an issue. Does a "transgender" male still have the same physical abilities as a heterosexual or homosexual male? Bottom line, males have (on average), more physical prowess than women. The rules should remain the same. Let him wear a leotard and lipstick, but the goal still counts for one point.
You're just a racist, sexist, homophobe for even bringing this up - you should be kicked out of school.
(/sarcasm)
Wasnt that the school where the prof spray painted her own car and them claimed racists did it? I could be wrong, but the school name sounds familiar..
A blot on an otherwise pristine record. The president of the school still gets an earful about this when she speaks to alumni.
Dont feel bad, the school I attend, Utah Valley State, spent all of the years allotment for speakers on just one-Michael Moore..

Gerald: Eh excuse me, where, where is the bathroom for dolphins?
Usher: We don't... have one.
Gerald: Well where the hell am I supposed to go to the bathroom? I need a large tank with salt water.
Usher: Ahhh- Too bad?
Gerald: Damnit you people have to make special arrangements for transpecies people like me! I may be a dolphin, but I'm also a lawyer!
Usher: You're a lawphin?
The correct answer is you do away with scoring.
Just like in some Little Leagues around the country.
Keeping "score" is inherently oppresive and a remant of the patriarchal/ facist state.

Reminds me of the conservative "bake sales" that mock affirmative action by charging a variable rate for the cookies based on race/gender/etc.
I went to Pitzer, myself. This was the type of crap that turned me into a conservative.
