As a Catholic we often talk about the natural order of life.
We look at how nature was created, including man, and we see how the only advancement for a society is through a heterosexual union, that creates children for the continued advancement of the society. Anything counter to that undermines the underpinnings of a stable society.

You're at a loss because there isn't a valid non-religious reason the state should allow straights should marry and gays shouldn't.
As Hildy pointed out, however, there is a valid reason the state shouldn't stick its nose into marriage period.

The purpose of marriage is to raise children, bringing well-adjusted kids into society.
Children rasied by gays are more prone to depression, suicide, crime, dropping out of school, and violence.
It's not to the benefit of society to encourage more kids like this.

Broad outlook...
Procreation is the key... What is the incentive for a woman to give birth if all the world is gay?...within 5 generations we'd all look the same if we just use artificial insemination and the same 8 women that will agree to have the children to populate this wonderful world.

Simple answer is that society gives the married certain special status and advantages because heterosexual marriages produce children.
Homosexual marriages do not, and when society allows adoption by such people, the incidence of sexual dysfunctional children is higher than in normal families.
Why argue with that population? It is like arguing with Liberals. They drag the argument down to their level and then beat you with experience gained at that level.
As Franklin advised regarding debates with drunks, soon observers have difficulty determining who is who.

There was an article in the Weekly Standard about gay marriage, and what it has done in the Netherlands.
It was quite comprehensive, following the degradation of their society in general after gay marriage became the norm.
In essence, because marriage is generally seen as a union for the raising of children, when a society sees gay marriage as normal, there becomes no reason for anyone to GET married. The majority of children there are now born out of wedlock, and parents either don't live with each other at all or they don't stay together because there is no commitment.
It is a good article and spans quite a lot of time.
Gay marriage is not about gay people getting married. It is one of the many tools used by liberals to destroy our traditional culture.
And personally, I don't know any gay people who even give a rat's patootie about getting married.

When a male and female have unprotected sex the result is a baby in normal circumstances. Whether you believe in God or not this will happen. You belief system makes no difference. It is the way nature intended for it to happen.
Of course this will only happen between a male and female. What happens in gay sex? Is there any procreation? What happens? This is a non-natural union. It is only for their own pleasure. You can take it from there.
