ALBANY, Nov. 29 - Jeanine F. Pirro's bid to unseat Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton suffered an embarrassing setback on Tuesday when the State Legislature's most powerful Republican said she should call the whole thing off and run for state attorney general instead.
The remarks by the official, Joseph L. Bruno, the majority leader of the State Senate, forced out into the open simmering concerns about Ms. Pirro's candidacy, which has been beset by gaffes and fund-raising difficulties. And it heightened the sense that the state Republican Party is nervous about its future and riven by squabbles as its de facto leader, Gov. George E. Pataki, prepares to step down at the end of next year.
Mr. Bruno said that Ms. Pirro, who was elected Westchester district attorney three times, would be a better fit as a candidate for attorney general. "I have said from the beginning, and I know a lot of my colleagues, and people within the party, share the thought, that she would make a great attorney general," he said. "By background, by her experience, by her prosecutorial record. And I hope that before this procedure gets too much further, that Jeanine Pirro would reconsider and run for A.G."
While Mr. Bruno's remarks echo what some Republicans have been murmuring quietly for some time now, they put him at odds with both Governor Pataki, who endorsed Ms. Pirro for the Senate last month, and the chairman of the state Republican Party, Stephen J. Minarik III, who is supporting her Senate candidacy.
And while the remarks were hardly welcomed by the Pirro for Senate campaign, Ms. Pirro tried to put the best spin on it. "Senator Bruno is a respected majority leader and I appreciate his confidence in my abilities," she said in a terse, two-sentence written statement. "However..."

Well, at least he's half-right with being anti-Weld. As for backing Golisano...
It's going to be interesting to see how NY State Conservative Party plays its hand. It can't afford to back a bunch of RINOs, otherwise it's members stay home or vote for another third party. It has to get 50,000 votes, or it goes the way of the Liberal, Green and Right To Life parties in NY, i.e. electoral oblivion.
Is "arkancide" actually a new expression to you? It's been around for about ten years to describe the curious fate of so many people who got on the Clinton's ---- list and found out the hard way that they were doomed.
Its pretty slim pickings.
The only other guy is Randy Daniels, and as much and he talks and sounds like a conservative, his background says he is far left (former Dinkins guy, worked for the media, engaged to the daughter of a dem party boss, etc).
She must be honest.
There's something else to consider in all of this. Since the modern era of electing Senators directly (post-1916), not a single solitary Democrat has EVER lost reelection for this office in New York (however, many Republicans have).
Troublesome that sounds, but then again, maybe he "grew" in the right direction. At least Daniels has more government experience than Golisano (of course, that can cut both ways).
Oh please. There's nothing "sinister" about NY Republicans telling Pirro to get out of a race she'll end up losing in anyway. The lady is a joke.
LOL. One of my favorite movies.
Stay home when you have a chance to vote against The Arkansas Grifters? Not on your life.
My check to Jeanine is in the mail.
So who does he want to run against her heinous?
We need to defeat Bruno.
Know anyone that will run against him in a primary?
Well, the Deceiver simply MUST support his sister!
Are they actually afraid of Ankles, or did she just bribe them?
^^
Admittedly, I know nothing about NY politics, but I suspect that this guy Bruno wants a Senate candidate that he thinks has a chance again Hitlery, and that candidate wouldn't be Pirro.
Yeah, new to me even though I saw the Clinton Chronicles back in 95 or so. I like it. I'll use it too.
"And it heightened the sense that the state Republican Party is nervous about its future ...."
Yeah... right. I'd like to see on real republican in the whole state of NY.
