N.C. prepares for 1,000th U.S. execution

RALEIGH, N.C., Nov. 30 (UPI) -- North Carolina prepared for an execution Friday that would be the 1,000th since the U.S. Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty in 1976.

On Tuesday, Virginia Gov. Mark Warner granted clemency to Robin Lovitt, 42, who was convicted of killing a man during a 1999 Arlington, Va., pool hall robbery.

Lovitt's reprieve put Kenneth Lee Boyd, 57, in line to become the 1,000th convict put to death since reinstatement of the death penalty, the Raleigh (N.C.) News and Observer reported.

Boyd was convicted in the 1988 slayings of his estranged wife, Julie Boyd, and her father, Thomas Curry, in Rockingham County, N.C. Prosecutors said Boyd paused to reload when he shot his wife nine times in front of his children.

Boyd's chances for a reprieve from Friday's execution rested with the federal courts and with North Carolina Gov. Mike Easley, who was considering clemency.

Prison officials and the governor's office said they were treating Boyd's case as they would any other execution.

Think as soon as it's over Ed McMahon will jump out with balloons and confetti celebrating Number 1,000? :-)

Hopefully we can get the process moving faster for murders like 'tookie' or whatever his name is... the founder of the Crips. I grew up at the tail end of the blood and Crips rivalry here in Long Beach, CA and witnessed some crazy stuff. IMO, all of them need the chair.

Virginians better get used to this. When Kaine said he would enforce the death penalty, he was lying just like Warner did in 2001.

The media again obsessed with numbers over names, deeds, or in this case, crimes.

But if we concentrate on numbers, this is a body count we can all live with. In fact, we will probably live longer for it.

Why don't they publish the number of persons (usually innocents or family members, including children) killed by these animals? What about prior convictions/offenses?

The pols are focused on the number and don't want to be associated with the threshold figure - 1,000 sounds like a lot until you look at crime statistics and the number of persons on death row.

How come those executed prior to the ban and then reinstatement don't count?

Hmm. Crimes committed in 1988... and he's just now about to be executed in 2005. Easely will not exuse him, IMHO, but only because the creep killed a "female". It's politically correct and expedient to execute him. I'm just grateful the same media circus which exists in CA isn't here. Very grateful. My Song of the South! Yippee!

Why is it that we never see the Liberal MSM ever trumpet the 1000th or 2000th abortion in America?

Yup, I was thinking more like the 1000th annual death by crime, or 1000th black-on-black murder .... let the media report THAT ....
