Man gets 12 years for shooting Manitoba Mountie

PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, Man. -- A man who admitted to shooting a Manitoba RCMP officer in the face has been sentenced to 12 years in prison, but will be out sooner than that.

Twenty-four-year old Michael Gary Regamy told Court of Queen's Bench he was sorry for the shooting of Const. Mike Templeton almost four years ago.

Justice Albert Clearwater called the shooting a serious crime but said Regamy can be rehabilitated.

Clearwater agreed with a joint recommendation from the Crown and defence that the 12 years run concurrent with four years Regamy has already served on other charges.

Regamy, who is originally from Edmonton, was in a stolen car with two other people on Feb. 22, 2002, near Portage la Prairie, Man.

Five shots were fired at Templeton when he tried to pull over the vehicle on the Trans-Canada Highway.

Not even funny, I feel very sorry for this officers family and friends. Reading an article like this makes it very, very difficult to hear liberals in Ottawa complaining about rising crime and murder rates, then blaming it on gun owners. Lock 'em up, get 'em off the streets.

I hope Regamy moves right next door to the judge when he's let out.

So he stole a car, killed a cop, and they're letting him out after just 4 years? No wonder Canada is going down the drain.

How in the hell would this fool know this rat could be rehabilitated?

Kanada is in one hell of a mess and we're close behind!

Take your pic:

'victim of his environment'
'tragic up-bringing'
'breakdown of society'
'Bush's fault'
'McDonald's Fault' (assuming he was fat, of course)
'WalMart's fault' (somehow??...)

A Mounties life, then, is worth 12 years, less with good behavior.. 2 Mounties would be 24 years or less.. betcha TAX avoidance is not handled that cheaply..

Almost makes you want to run right out and sign up as a Mountie, dont it..

It's a shame he didn't get 58 grains in the brain for shooting a cop.

Well, you have to remember in the ideal world that we should try to create (you know, the ones that start off with "If everyone would just..." or, "If we all...") we can do away with things like 'the military' and police officers. Or at least disarm the police, because guns are bad.

The Policeman didn't die. The bullet exited his cheek then rentered his neck grazing his spinal corde. He went back to work 3 months later. This guy got 12 years because it was "attempted murder"

"Michael Gary Regamy told Court of Queen's Bench he was sorry for the shooting . . . "

Well that makes it all right then.

Well, there you go. The man's sorry. That proves he can be rehabilitated, n'est pas?

Oh, and just out of morbid female curiosity, what do they mean when they say Ragamy shot Const. Templeton "in the face". With what? I know it was a gun, but what kind of gun? And "shot in the face" how? A slight graze on the forehead? Half his face (eye, cheek, lower jaw) blown away?

see post 16. Odd that the article didn't mention that. On average & in my opinion, I find the National Post to be one of the better Canadian media outlets.

Thanks for the info! 12 years for attempted murder of an officer still seems pretty light, though I imagine in the US we have had guys get off like that.

Thank God he wasn't killed.
