A Few of FR's Finest ....Every Day
FR is a Treasure Trove of talented, compassionate, patriotic, wonderful people who gather every day to discuss the latest news and issues; salute and support our military and our leaders; tell a few jokes; learn a new word; write poetry; pray for those in need; and congratulate those who are deserving. Thank you, Jim Robinson, for giving us the vehicle in which we can express ourselves.
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997. Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.

A Few of FR's Finest November 11, 2001
So many people have written me since my original Veteran's Day Tribute, asking how they, or a loved one, could be included in that tribute. Since I could no longer add the photos to the body of the thread, I had been including them in additional posts as I received enough to make another collage.
Still that didn't seem to be enough. I think there's never been a better nor more appropriate time to keep the faces of our own Veterans and Active Military in front of FReepers--every day! That's why I wanted to do yet another Daily Thread .....ABOUT FReepers .....and FOR FReepers. But not only about our Military FReepers; for all FReepers! Wouldn't it be nice to get to know a few of the other FReepers as well? That's why we've created a place for just that. This is a friendly room in JimRob's house where FReeper FRiends can gather every day and just say hello if that's all they want to do.
There's more of course. We sometimes feature different FReepers, with a little background information on who they are and what makes them who they are, along with a few photos you might not have seen on other threads; sometimes others write an essay for us to post as the feature for the day; sometimes our presentation is a human interest story found elsewhere that you might not have read; sometimes special holiday threads; but whatever the topic of the day, it is always with FR's Finest in mind and that is YOU!
If you would like to be featured, or would like to see someone else featured, please send me a private FR mail.
Every Monday we will post the photos of FR's Military Personnel that I have collected and put into groups; these will be available to view through a link the remainder of the week - every day just a click away. :) If you would like to add a photo of yourself or a loved one in the military, past or present, please let me know; I will hold it until I have enough for a new group.
Thank you, and please have fun with us...every day! ~ Billie

A Refreshing Change
Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift! 2 Corinthians 9:15
|
Starting each October, catalogs begin to fill up my mailbox advertising clothes, appliances, shoes, candles, books, musicmore than I could ever need or want for myself or for loved ones at Christmas.
But one catalog I received last November was a refreshing change. It was filled with ways people could give to orphans, the poor, the hungry, the sick, and the disabled through an international Christian ministry. The note in the front of the catalog read: "Share the light and love of Jesus Christ with people whose lives are filled with darkness and despair." What a relief to think about something other than buying one more thing for someone who already has so much!
The Macedonian church was an example of generosity (2 Corinthians 8:1-6). They gave themselves first to the Lord, then to those helping the needy in Jerusalem. Paul encouraged the Corinthians to follow their example and Christ's, who gave Himself and "became poor, that [we] through His poverty might become rich" (v.9).
Do you want a refreshing change this Christmas? Consider new ways to give yourself to the Lord and to those in need. It's a meaningful way to thank God for "His indescribable gift" of salvation through His Son. Anne Cetas

Read 'em myself and so many times it was just the the right Word at the right time

Catching the Military Monday thread tonight, for a change,
instead of close to noon tomorrow, I couldn't help but notice
what excellent company I'm in in the first military collage.
Miss Billie has in the middle of it COB1 (aka TexasCowboy)
next to me, and skipping one, is Tonk..:))
Looks as if you and I, Tonk,
have our very own guardian angel to watch our backs
and keep us on course...
You truly earned your rest, Marine....

I need to find a way to see if I can do something for any military dependents who are living in my area and are going to have to spend Christmas without their husband, father, etc. I'm not sure how to find out that information.

How some celebrated Thanksgiving, so we might enjoy ours - -
Army Gen. George W. Casey Jr., Multinational Force Iraq commander,
talks with Task Force Baghdad soldiers during the evening
Thanksgiving meal Nov. 24 at the Rock of the Marne Sports Oasis Dining Facility.
Casey, the Army's top general in Iraq, joined the soldiers in Baghdad
as they feasted on turkey, ham, prime rib and all the trimmings.

Here is the rest of the narrative about the Thanksgiving meal in Baghdad!
Starting at 1 a.m., the soldiers and civilians who work in the dining facility began to give it a new look. The inside of the dining facility was changed to give Task Force Baghdad soldiers a very different dining experience from they find day-to-day. Displays made of food - such as a gingerbread model of the palace in which the soldiers were eating, ice sculptures and other decorations - adorned the facility. A soldier dressed as a pilgrim and an interpreter dressed as an American Indian greeted the soldiers as they came in.
"The meal was excellent. It definitely took you away from Baghdad," said Army Sgt. Timothy Hartung, an engineer with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Brigade Combat Team. "The meal really showed that the staff cares about making us feel like we're at home."
The dining facility staff expected at least 4,000 people and prepared a virtual cornucopia of Thanksgiving favorites.
"We put a lot of emphasis on Thanksgiving, because it's one of the biggest meals of the year and it's a way for us to say thanks to the soldiers for what they do every day," said Clyde Randolph, dining facility supervisor.
Cooks prepared 2,500 pounds of turkey, 1,200 pounds of prime rib, as well as ham hocks, a whole pig, 500 pounds of Cornish hens, 600 pounds of roasted ham, 700 pounds of collard greens, 800 pounds of mashed potatoes, 600 pounds of corn on the cob, 750 pounds of dressing and 2,500 pies.
"We asked quite a few soldiers what they wanted for Thanksgiving. A lot (of them) wanted ham hocks, collard greens, pumpkin pie and pecan pie, so we made a big effort to make sure we had all those things today," Randolph said.
Thanksgiving is a day for many to spend time with their families and loved ones when they are at home and the staff wanted to create the same feeling here. "They're away from their families and this is a home away from home, so we wanted them to feel like they're at home and give them what their mama would fix," Randolph said.
(Army Staff Sgt. Raymond Piper is assigned to the 4th Brigade Combat Team public affairs office.)
And you think *YOU* cooked a lot?!!

Excellent, we are working with a local radio station to do the same thing.
Great idea putting in the Daily breads.
I couldn't tell you how many people email me and tell me "that was exactly what I needed today".
They are not my words, I just post them.
Thank you !

That's right and if we don't get this nourishment we die. Thank you for making sure we do get it!
Is it warming up there in Buffalo? We had high winds all day and now it's cooling down here. Not like you get, but cool to me.
