Texas Woman Mauled to Death by Six Dogs
Nov 27 2:52 PM US/Eastern
THORNDALE, Texas
A pack of six dogs mauled a 76-year-old woman to death as she worked in her yard, authorities said.
Lillian Loraine Stiles was riding on a lawn mower in her front yard Saturday when she was confronted by the dogs, described as pit bull- rottweiler mixed breeds, said Milam County Sheriff Charlie West.
Investigators think Stiles was attacked when she got off the mower and headed into her house.
Stiles had severe bites over her entire body, and a man who tried to help her was bitten on one leg, authorities said.
The dogs were found at the home of Stiles' neighbor, Jose Hernandez.
The sheriff's department will send the findings of its investigation to the Milam County District Attorney's Office, which will decide if any criminal charges will be filed against Hernandez.
Thorndale is located about 70 miles west of College Station.
I believe in the state of Texas (and probably other states) it is standard operating procedure to put down any stray pit bulls immediately. It is against Texas law to adopt out such predators. I can see no earthly reason to allow this breed to exist. These are not "wild" animals like lions, bears and wolves. They are simply unpredictable killers who have no place in civilized society.
Who in their right mind would aquire a dog they 'KNOW' will kill?
Responsible people don't choose their dogs because they know they'll kill.
Anyone who chooses a large or medium size breed
has to be aware of the potential damage their dog can cause.
They would be fools not to.
But the fact is for the vast majority of responsible owners and their dogs this problem does not come up.
They keep their dogs under control. They would be fools not to.
My point remains, owning a particular breed does not make a person a fool.
Condemning a whole breed however.....
Bump for later
No. Not every dog of any breeding can be trained, its behavior modified, or made safe even to its owner. Some dogs of any breeding may be unsafe and unpredictable for any number of reasons. Some dogs are so aggressive from young adulthood they need to be put down. They don't grow out of it and they cannot be trained out of it.
I don't know anything about pit bulls but I have seen many rottweiler walked on leashes by military police and various law enforcement, as well as by responsible owners. I have also seen rottweilers used as therapy dogs in childrens hospitals and old age homes and so on.
Just curious. What happens should someone make an apparent threatening movement toward the military police dog handler? I bet it does not roll over and beg to have its tummy rubbed. :-)
I have a hard time imagining a Rottweiler as a therapy tool. If you saw it, I believe it. But, I just cannot imagine it.
Swinging back to the beginning . . .
A teen age driver is a much greater safety risk than a rottweiler. Call your insurance agent and ask which would cost more on your insurance a certain type of dog breed or insuring a teenager.
Here, you run into that problem with equivalency again. To make a statement like that you need an equivalent exposure. 100 teenage drivers. 100 Rotweilers. You're never going to see that kind of equivalency.
Thought this might be of interest to you. A very, very sad story. Pay special attn to #39.
I apologize. I should have courtesy-ping'd you. I'm sorry.
There is no presumption involved.
I deal with facts.
You are a fool.
Don't be talkin' the truth 'round here...
The polont tthat makes these dogs so dangerous is that they can be provoked---sometimes very easily---into behaving as wild animals.
individuals who keep dangerous dogs in neighborhoods are foolish.
They assume they have control of them but simply do not understand that they are playing with fire.
And their neighbors are always the ones who pay the price.
What is a dog, a cat, and a skunk?
TYLS that ALL he had was a dog. Playing with fire, my friend.
Do we advocate the banning of fire? Ah, no. And fire is more dangerous!
Didn't get any last night?
You're not only an arrogant ass, but an obvious idiot as well.
Any what?
Ah, some fires, yes, we most certainly do. Regulated by city ordinance, as a matter of fact.
in California, they prosecuted two people for MURDER when their two dogs, that lived in an apt with them, got free and savaged a young lady while one of the owners looked on in horror......
now, I think that case was one of over prosecution, pressured by a large gay community (San Francisco) and a gay prosecutor....( victim was a gay woman)
however, there is a place where humans must be held responsible for alowing animals to roam free like this neighbor did.....he must be held accountable....he must do some jail time .....
You understated my faults.
You are, however, still foolish---and wrong!
It's the deaths - child deaths - that stir the emotion against pit-bulls. One child dead means foolishly (your word) overlooking statistics and advocating banning private property. Standing on a metal ladder is more dangerous. We don't ban metal ladders. As for fire - you still have the right to cook in your house with out a permit right?
