Texas Woman Mauled to Death by Six Dogs

Nov 27 2:52 PM US/Eastern

THORNDALE, Texas

A pack of six dogs mauled a 76-year-old woman to death as she worked in her yard, authorities said.

Lillian Loraine Stiles was riding on a lawn mower in her front yard Saturday when she was confronted by the dogs, described as pit bull- rottweiler mixed breeds, said Milam County Sheriff Charlie West.

Investigators think Stiles was attacked when she got off the mower and headed into her house.

Stiles had severe bites over her entire body, and a man who tried to help her was bitten on one leg, authorities said.

The dogs were found at the home of Stiles' neighbor, Jose Hernandez.

The sheriff's department will send the findings of its investigation to the Milam County District Attorney's Office, which will decide if any criminal charges will be filed against Hernandez.

Thorndale is located about 70 miles west of College Station.

Some dogs have no reason to exist outside a secure kennel under professional supervision and care.  Running loose, they should be shot on sight.

I think some breeds of animals should require a license to handle and insurance up the a$$ to keep. You cannot just keep a lion in your yard... No different for a so-called “pit bull.”

I agree with those who recommend bullets. Why?

1) Snakes aren't a problem. I've encountered rattlesnakes maybe a hundred times when hiking. Only one was aggressive, and it was easily avoided. Real rattlesnakes don't deserve to be shot - and if they do, a bullet well aimed will do the trick nicely.

2) Against a dog, a bullet is the only way to go. Many years ago my own dog convinced 3 dobermans to leave me alone (rural Arizona). After that, I started carrying a .22. Yes, it was small - so I could conceal it. It also had the advantage of being cheap to practice. After firing 5,000 rounds or so, I didn't have to worry about missing. I figured a close in shot to the head was the way to go with a dog. The shot shells don't have enough penetration to do more than, at best, take out an eye.

3) Never know when you might meet the 2 legged snakes. My little .22 was nice to have when I encountered 8 drinking young men using my car as a gathering place on a return from a hike. They started to fan out around me as I arrived - I pointed the little .22, pointed out also that I wouldn't miss, and asked who wanted to be first. Guess there wasn't a hero in the bunch, because no one wanted to volunteer. And at close range, and with all the shooting I had done with it, I planned on head shots. (At the time, I could consistently put 5 of 6 shots into the bottom of a soda can at 75').

Just a suggestion...

A bit like keeping a bear or tiger in your back yard.

Except that dogs have been domesticated for 10s of thousands of years.
And bears and tigers are anywhere from 400 to 800 lbs. heavier.

The dogs are strong, resourceful, and motivated to get loose.

Some are and that is why responsible owners take all necessary precautions to ensure this doesn't happen.

The fools which own them are a danger to their neighbors.

There are many thing I wish fools did not own.
But owning a particular breed of dog does not make a person a fool.

It is common knowledge that certain breeds of dogs tend more toward agressiveness than others.

I would agree that terriers tend to be aggressive.
But even dogs such as Labs, Cocker Spaniels and others have reputations for aggressiveness.
'Pit bulls' tend to be dog-aggressive but that doesn't necessarily translate to human-aggressive.

If they are large and possess powerful undershot jaws the danger is increased.

I don't know if undershot jaws makes a bite more powerful
but I do know that "pit bulls" do not have undershot jaws.
Boxers and Bulldogs have naturally undershot jaws.

One of the few times the denizens of SF did something right was when they prosecuted the two lawyers who owned the dogs that killed a woman. The basis for that prosecution was that the defendants knew or should have known the dogs' vicious tendencies. I suspect it will be fairly easy to prove Mr. Hernandez well knew the vicious tendencies of his dog pack. If so, he could go away for a long and justified time.

That's what should happen, of course. But he's an illegal alien. His "rights" might trump ours.. resulting in the possibility of catch and release deportation. In that case, he'll be back, no worse for wear.

Surely, you're not claiming some numerical, proportional equivalency?

No I am looking at it as a safety issue. Bad driving and swimming pools kill many, many more people than any dog or dog breed.

One neighborhood plus one Rottweiller equals one known threat.

Using your logic you have to say the same and then some if there is a teen age driver or a swimming pool in your neighborhood. A dog of any breed can be trained and curbed by a responsible owner. A teen age driver is a much greater safety risk than a rottweiler. Call your insurance agent and ask which would cost more on your insurance a certain type of dog breed or insuring a teenager.

Ever watch what happens when one of those beasts is being walked about on a leash?

I don't know anything about pit bulls but I have seen many rottweiler walked on leashes by military police and various law enforcement, as well as by responsible owners. I have also seen rottweilers used as therapy dogs in childrens hospitals and old age homes and so on.

Nice try...a chicken, a rabbit, a pheasant...quite a bit different than another dog or a human.

You spoke of a cat. I spoke of chickens.
My point was to the dangers of arguing from the specific to the general.

Or do you excuse your dogs from differentiating?

My dog apparently has greater powers of differentiating than some posters.

They are insane. They would probably have kept on even if she'd shot one.

"These dogs should be outlawed, rounded up and exterminated as a breed. Period. End of discussion.

I agree 100% ............ heck I always have my 11 lb mini-Schnauzer on a leash when I walk her, for the protection against her attacking some one! : )

Surely, I'm missing something.

The subject was intimidating people with it and then threatening people who spoke up about it. Police said there was little they could do as long as it was on a leash. I took it upon my self to nonchalantly walk up and shoot it in the head with two hollow points. Not sure if it was the same dog...

Courtesy of your tax dollars, I became a small arms expert when I was a snot nosed kid just out of highschool. I can make apple sauce within about a thousand yards of an apple.

The elected sheriff is a personal friend of mine, have the permits.

The subject made himself real scarce and moved out of the neighborhood a few weeks later (didn't see him take any dogs with him).

I must not have been a very nice fellow in those weeks, but I'll leave you missing that part...

A wolverine isn't and neither is a puma...

Your point being?

Your point being?

You obviously know my point.
Perhaps you would like to tell me the difference between wolverine or puma and a dog.

dogs do act independently of their owners.

ONLY if owners are ineffective alpha-males.

No different for a so-called “pit bull.”

'Pit bulls' are out of their environment when they aren't in a pit - covered with a little dirt.

I disagree. When you acquire a breed you KNOW will kill and you haven't the brain to keep it under control away from others, you're a fool.

"The elected sheriff is a personal friend of mine, have the permits."

Neither your sheriff friend nor your permits would have done you any good had someone complained you were terrorizing the neighborhood with your firearms. You'd have lost them, and if convicted of that felony, your right to keep them as well.
