N.M. Gov Admits He Wasn't Baseball Pick

Gov. Bill Richardson is coming clean on his draft record — the baseball draft, that is, admitting that his claim to have been a pick of the Kansas City A's in 1966 was untrue.

For nearly four decades, Richardson, often mentioned as a possible Democratic presidential candidate, has maintained he was drafted by the Kansas City Athletics.

The claim was included in a brief biography released when Richardson successfully ran for Congress in 1982. A White House news release in 1997 mentioned it when he was about to be named U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. And several news organizations, including The Associated Press, have reported it as fact over the years.

But an investigation by the Albuquerque Journal found no record of Richardson being drafted by the A's, who have since moved to Oakland, or any other team.

Informed by the newspaper of its findings, the governor acknowledged the error in a story in Thursday's editions.

"After being notified of the situation and after researching the matter ... I came to the conclusion that I was not drafted by the A's," he said.

Richardson spokesman Gilbert Gallegos declined to comment when reached by the AP on Thursday.

Richardson, a right-handed pitcher who played at Tufts University, said he was actively scouted by several major league teams in the 1960s.

He insisted his name appeared on "a draft list of some kind" created by the Los Angeles Dodgers and Pittsburgh Pirates. He named team scouts, whom he said told him that he "would or could" be drafted. The scouts have since died.

Richardson later developed arm trouble, eliminating any possible pro career.

Richardson, often mentioned as a possible Democratic presidential candidate

I think only by himself. Every time I hear of his ambition it reminds me of John Ehrlichman (I think it was) who said of a politician that he had "unexplainable Presidential ambitions" (or something like that).

Richardson will lose the support of everyone who voted for him precicely because they thought he was drafted by the A's.

Do you suppose that, when the Democrats accuse President Bush (or anyone else) of "lying," they are projecting?

Or are they just plain lying?

Oh man! He's really screwed now. You can lie about a lot of things in politics, but Baseball isn't one of them.

I recall having read years ago when he was still "Congressman" Richardson and already eternally popular in NM that Bill Richardson had once lied about having been either a speech writer or a "close aide" to the late HHH. I think he was forced to admit that he had lied about his friendship with Vice President Humphrey, who lost NM in 1968. What else has this popular New Mexican been lying about for so long? Still, he is very popular in NM, and the citizenry there would presumably sooner secede from the Union than retire Richardson.

As governor he will have to explain why New Mexico ranks last in public school funding and any other stats people dig up on New Mexico.

Won't work. Bill Clinton broke that obstacle in 1992. People in AR adored Bill Clinton just as the New Mexicans believe everything Bill Richardson tells them. Richardson, it would seem, however, is not a serious candidate so long as HRC throws her glasses into the ring.

I believe that I read that his mother is (or was) Hispanic but the "Richardson" is from an Anglo father. Nevertheless, people in NM believe in him!
